 | From my local morning paper:
Peter Gabriel is working on a new album where different musicans interpret each other songs. Just the mixing of the album remains to be done.
Magnetic Fields, Paul Simon and Lou Reed are three of the artists.
- It will be very interesting to hear what they have done with my songs, says Peter Gabriel
==
It´s a bit confliccting news above. Either it´s a Peter Gabriel tribute album (which the last comment suggest) or it´s an album with, let´s say 12 artists, doing one song each from one of the others.

 | Oh wow ! What a Surprise !
I knew about this Gabriel project, but had no clue that Simon was involved.
Maybe this project has evolved, but I know it is entitled "Scratch My Back". The concept was that Gabriel was doing an album of covers. In exchange, the artists covered had to agree to cover eventually a Gabriel song.
If I have to bet on one song with Simon, it would be Biko, but maybe there will be another surprise. Let´s remember that Simon did it live in acoustic a few years ago for a Gabriel-related benefit(Witness Org). |

 | I have got more info I think.
There would be a double-CD entitled "Scratch my Back/I Will Cratch Yours". The former being PG covers of others, the latter the covered artists doing PG songs.
Apparently, PG will cover Simon´s Boy in the Bubble. I have no info about the one Simon picked up for PG. My guess at this moment is Biko.
Release of this album would be early October, but it does not seem to be 100% sure. |

 | I´ve just found a video where Peter Gabriel talks about the project... and about "a young American songwriter called Paul Simon"... And he sings a slow version of "The Boy In The Bubble".

 | Hey - good job Cécilia !
Fascinating. Yikes...The Boy In The Bubble with Peter is quite different than what we know. Piano and strings...
At 1st, cannot say I liked it, but going to try again. |

 | Both had their biggest solo success in 1986 with Graceland and "So".
Both nominated for album of the year, but the American Boy in the bubble won it... |

 | Intersting project and I´d be interested to hear which song Paul Simon records.
My favourite cover of The Boy In The Bubble is by the well-respected Bristol-based band, The Blue Aeroplanes.
The track was on their superb album ´Beatsongs´ and a video of it can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9eZ3O5StN8
This band really understand the music of the song and their interpretation captures the sound using multi-layed guitars where Peter Gabriel seems to have failed.
If you look at the comments there are some interesting statements, like ´Paul Simon is the greatest songwriter ever´ and ´The Blue Aeroplanes are better than the Beatles´ - both of which I would agree with! |

 | Yeah, I knew this Blue Aeroplanes one. It is good...
Gabriel: yeah, I was very enthousiastic at 1st, but then I heard this live version and I said to myself...´what the hell is this ?´.
Boy in the Bubble has always been this exhuberance in rhythm, the very track that summarize the whole project (Roy Halee), the one that made Simon thought about his listeners...´hey, you have not heard this before´.
Gabriel arrived with a slow piano version + orchestral arrangements. For me, it is just ´you did not get it man !´.
But will wait for the studio version... |

 | Found this today on BBC News:
´All-star cast´ for Gabriel album
By Georgie Rogers
6 Music News reporter
Former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel will release his first album for seven years next year.
"It´s a song swap," said composer John Metcalfe about the record, which sees Gabriel and some "extremely legendary artists" cover each other´s songs.
The Scratch My Back project had its first outing at the Womad festival when Gabriel and a string section performed Paul Simon´s The Boy In The Bubble.
It was recorded with producer Bob Ezrin at London´s Air Studios in July.
´Sounds amazing´
John Metcalfe, who worked on some orchestral reinterpretations for the record, revealed to BBC 6 Music that the record is currently being mixed.
He added; "I´m not allowed to say who, just yet, but there are some very, very famous singers and bands involved."
Writing on Gabriel´s official site, Metcalfe revealed the album is acoustic, with no guitars, drums or world instruments.
? There are some very, very famous singers and bands involved ?
John Metcalfe
"It sounds amazing, even though I say it myself. It is literally Peter with an orchestra, sometimes the orchestra is quite large, then there are some more chamber music-style, sparse songs.
"But the songs are not simply covers, they are quite major reinterpretations of some famous stuff. It´s quite radical and we´re hoping that people really get it and enjoy it," he explained.
While Metcalfe remained tight-lipped on which other artists are involved, he said Gabriel set out to get a good range.
"There are some all time great singer-songwriters and bands, and then there are some bands that are very, very well known from the last 10 years, and one or two more recent bands and singers as well," he said.
"There should be something in there for everybody."
He added it is possible Gabriel´s versions of other people´s songs will be released initially and then covers of the musician´s songs might be released once a month online via Gabriel´s Lunar Club.
Peter Gabriel had a string of hit albums in the 1980s and in recent years has become well-known for his promotion of world music and involvement with the Womad charity.

"SCRATCH" my back, I´ll "SCRATCH" yours"... Knowing Peter Gabriel I thought this has to be rather a somehow twisted interpetation of songs than a selection of covers. In any other way it wouldn´t make a sense. I´m courious to hear a Peter Gabriel song sounding like one of Paul Simon himself.
I tip this one might be his choise an he will slow down it a little bit too:

 | Thank you Ute for the article.
I had my turn-off with this live interpretation in July by Peter.
No guitar and drums...beurk ! Still, will buy it.
Simon and Gabriel share lots of points together. They are the two most sucessful Western artist in my mind to have open ´world-music´ sounds to massive audiences, while being able to keep an authentic Simon or Gabriel sound.
As already mentionned, both had their biggest solo records in 1986.
Biko is a famous song about apartheid in South Africa; the exact location where the Graceland album takes its roots.
More recently, Simon took the Gabriel´s homme de confiance to mix his own ´Surprise´: Tchad Blake.
Unfortunately, I must say too that both are going downhill since the early 1990´s. Both spent enormous amount of time on two flops: one being Capeman, the other the UK millenium show. |

 | Peter put on his web site a podcast where he talks about the 1st 4 tracks of his album.
http://realworld.co.uk/podcasts/petergabriel_scrat chmyback_01.mp3
He thinks that Boy in the Bubble is one of the most great pop-rock lyrics of the last 20 years (25 years actually Pete ;-).
He said that Simon sent him a nice e-mail this week, and PG names a few songs consideration he made about Simon´s huge catalogue.
Well, please listen !
I think I am now looking forward to this album...sounds like Pete has found a new and another way to be inventive.
