 | Which do people Love - pure, raw talent or ability that is the product of years of obsessive hard work?
I like the recent stuff in part because he just figured out how to create great stuff from force of will, rather than the inspiration of BOTW or SOS. It interests me, and its more complex.

 | Absolutely got to agree with you Proof. I guess I´m speaking principally about music-melody,harmony and rhythm,as opposed to lyrics. I admire the way Paul is able pull together these complex musical fragments and turn them, with hard work, into something as wonderful as ´Can I Forgive Him´ or ´Love in Hard Times´. That´s not to say that inspiration and craftsmanship never meet-that would be silly. I think the inspiration is to create something-hard work and craftsmanship are used to bring that thought to fruition. I believe Paul has wrestled with this very issue himself. In Paul´s contribution to George Martins 1983 book ´Making Music´,he writes that it´s the simple things, not the clever ideas that work best. He goes on to say that he has to remind himself that it´s okay to write music that is simple. That was 1983 and coming out of the sophisticated jazz stylings of the ´Still Crazy´ and ´One Trick Pony´ albums. He seems to have made a return to complexity, but not confined to jazz chords-whatever,I love it! |
