 | In the new song, what is the purpose to the time change for the verse about Jay Z where the song slips into 3/4 time , a waltz. I know Paul Simon has become quite a fan of time changes through the course of songs, but does this highlight a part of the song, or just sound different or is it just there to be there. I think this song is really great, up until this point, after which I don´t really like it too much. I Love defining the early morning as the hour when the homeless move their cardboard boxes, very nice observation, but I can do without the anthropomorphization of zebra tears at the end.

 | The bridge section of a song is usually meant to be a lyrical departure from the main theme of the song, and the corresponding musical part marks this transition with either a tempo change,a melodic/harmonic detour, usually in a different key,or as in this case,a change in time signature along with the change in the melody. These things are rarely accidental-they are forced onto the composition by the writer. I actually like the change in time signature, and I also Love the sweetness of the 3 notes carrying the Jay Z line. It´s funny,it was a combination of that time change, and the ´kid on each knee´ part that first made me think it was a dream sequence-like the pilgrim tires from his search and lies down to sleep and the last thing he sees before nodding off is the Jay Z billboard, which he subsequently dreams about(the kid on each knee being an addition to the image in his dream only). It´s incorrect I realise now, though I still wonder about that part of the Jay Z reference. | | | | Nikki

 | Oh i see what you mean by the dream sequence now Ian. Yes I like that interpretation. And I agree with what you said about the 3 notes in the Jay-Z line. I kept on thinking there was something very particular about that line but couldn´t quite put my finger on it! | | | | Forum guest

 | I simply think he means that it won´t mean anything if we are gone. What life is left will go one without us.
I think this song is great. There is so much to think about. Paul, you are the master. I am still puzzling over songs you wrote in your 20´s! | | | | |
