I was listening to this song today, many here will put it to the worse Paul Simon song, i don´t think is so bad it is a littel funny popsong not a masterpiece but not a bad song, i like it. Hearts And Bones record is not either a mastepiece but the song Hearts and bones is. Many here in the forum give hearts and bones five out of five and many says Cars Are Cars are a bad song i can´t relly get it.

I really, really didn´t like Cars Are Cars the first few times I played the album but It has grown on me. It´s not my favorite but I do like it. And---Hearts And Bones is my second favorite album following Graceland. From time to time my tastes change depending on what is going on in my life at the time.

I really like Cars Are Cars... i Love the entire Hearts & Bones album... My favourite, I think it´s a deeply emotional album, but quirky with a superficial ´Pop´ feel for listners wo don´t care to explore the lyric. It covers all the PS bases and is a fabulous pre-cursor to Graceland...

Reading Carrie´s ´Wishful Drinking´ made me appreciate it all the more...

Maybe I Think Too Much?

I Love the album Hearts And Bones. It is my favorite album. I feel it is his most personal album and i feel he really opened up in this album. My favorite song is Think Too Much (b) and Train In The Distance is an extremely close second. To me, you just can´t beat them. But Cars Are Cars has a great message to it.

I saw Carrie´s show in Seattle. She played the last verse of "Hearts And Bones". Most of what she said was flattering to Paul, and she basically said her mental status just wore him out.

This is a song that doesn´t sound like a Paul Simon song but it is a favourite of mine. Listen to it on headphones for the full effect of "Drive ´em on the left, drive ´em on the right"!

I like all those pop songs on Hearts And Bones, like Allergies, When Numbers Get Serious, Think Too Much (A) and Song About The Moon.

I think that in 1983, with some decent fun music videos to play on MTV, these could have been much bigger hits - but alas there was not any promotion apart from that strange studio performance where Paul and the session players mime to the record.

A lot of people at the time, were expecting a S&G album or at least some appearance from Artie, myself included. That was one of the reasons it wasn´t so popular.

This then became my all time favourite PS album and changed me from a S&G>AG>>PS fan to a PS>>S&G fan.

I´ve always liked Cars Are Cars, esp admiring the drive on the left on the right effect, very clever. The lyrics are so perceptive! Always felt it would be a good partner with Johnny Cashs song about the ´53, ´54 ´55 etc automobile.

Hi Ian, in Carries book chapter 6 is called "from what I can see of the people like me, we get better but we never get well".

Carrie & paul were ´together´ in one form or another for 10 years. She talks about how she fall in Love with Paul, discusses the lyrics from H&B (the album & the song, being one & one half wandering jews, Paul being Jewish & carrie half Jewish), Graceland & ROTS that are about her... states that she was a bitch, and this is refferenced in "Allergies" in the lyric ´My heart is allergic to the woman I love & it´s changing the shape of my face´.

Debbie Reynolds (Carries Mom) also is quoted as saying "You know dear, Paul can be very charming - when he wants to be" which i think is very telling!

It´s a lovely, all-be-it ´brief´ account of her topsy-turvey life, and the Paul connection makes it all the more compelling. You should buy it :-)

The book and the show are very funny. Carrie is a very talented writer. Paul has said that Carrie has a perfectly unique sense of humor. I can see why they were attracted to each other. Carrie said they wee actually together on and off for 12 years.

Thanks for that Danny. Carrie always comes across as very forthright, open and honest in interviews and she is funny also,so yes I think I will buy it. Didn´t Carrie once say that what Paul needed was an intellectual geisha? lol! It´s easy to forget that she was still young when they were married. She talks about their relationship in some of her other books too, didn´t she?

Allergies is my favorite song on the album. The line " My heart is allergic to the women I Love and its changing the shape of my face" really hit me since his face did get so very thin when he was going through all that torment. I also suffer from clinical depression and will have to take anti-depressants for life so the line "from what I can see of the people like me, we get better but we never get well also really touches me. You would think such a song would depress me but I find it uplifting just knowing I´m not the only one in the worly with the problem. Its a great song and a great album.

Oh Suzi, for the same reason do I like ´Allergies´. It´s so freaky that you quote the line ´...we get better but we never get well...´,as I have often used that line to describe my own continual battle with depleted Seretonin levels. That´s what is so eloquent about Paul´s writing-his ability to lay out a complex subject matter with just a couple of lines. That song is full of wonderfully visual lines-´Something´s living on my skin´ and ´And it´s changing the shape of my face´. They always create the same pictures in my mind when I hear them. Great stuff.
