In relation to my p.m. news, I confirm that I easily got a new Simon song on iTunes for 1 buck today.

So no need to buy the compilation, unless you want to spend 20$ for a $1 song ´for free´.

The song is called ´Questions for the Angels´. The release date was today (thanks to the official site for letting us know :-()

It is qualified as ´single´ on iTunes, but I guess it is the sense of being a single tune alone rather than a song with any kind of hook.

It is spared. Mainly Simon on the guitar, with gorgeous back vocals from him, a few sonic effects. It is rather beautiful. It evolves around the travel of a pilgrim in NYC.

Well, LIHT, Amulet & QFTA...is this a trend for the next album ? Will there be something called an album ? Stay tuned.

It is an actual but rather spritual - journey.

Simon is great shape lyrically...

Here are the lyrics as I understood them. The (...) are to be completed by native English speakers (Joey ?).

"A pilgrim on a pilgramage
Walked across the Brooklyn Bridge
His sneakers torned
In the hour when the homeless move their cardboard blankets
And the new day is born

Folded in his backpack pocket
The questions that he copied from his heart
Who Am I in this lonely world?
Where will I make my bed tonight?
When twilight turns to dark

Questions for the angels...
Who believes in angels?
Fools do...
Fools and pilgrims all over the world

If you shop for Love in a bargin store
And you don´t get what you are bargin for...
Can you get your money back?
If an empty train in a railway station
Calls you to its destination
Can you choose another track?

Will I wake up from these violent dreams?
With my hair as white as the morning moon?

Questions for the angels...
Who believes in angels?
I do...
Fools and pilgrims all over the world

Downtown Brooklyn
The pilgrim is passing a bill-board
And catches his eyes
(...)
He is got a kid on each knee
He is wearing clothes that he wants us to try

If every human on the planet
And all the buildings (...)
Should disappear
Would a zebra grazing in the african savana
Care enough to share one zebra tear?

Questions for the angels..."

Quite Frankly,I don´t like these new trends-One Trick Pony dvd only available in the US,the Capeman full cast recording only available from i-tunes,and therefore limited to US and Canadian fans, not to mention the Starbucks only releases-as prevalent as these shops appear to be,there is none any where near where I live. And now this new song, again seemingly available only to fans who have access to i-tunes! It´s frustrating:-(

Ian,

I have iTunes installed in a virtual machine under Windows 7. Because it´s such a poorly written product, I won´t run it on my actual operating system.

However the frustrating thing is that for no particularly apparent reason I can´t purchase this new Paul Simon song, or even listen to it!

I´m assuming it´s to do with the licensing being different in New Zealand than it is in the US, but really, the record companies are making a rod for their own back. When people are willing to pay for things sure you´d make it easy for them!

Hi Stefan,I absolutely agree. They are imposing sales limitations on their own product when they market them this way! There have been a handful of items recently that I have found either difficult or even impossible to purchase. I´m aching to hear this new track, but I guess I´ll just have to wait.

I think the music industry has to wake up to the changes that have gone on around them. Either the music companies or the artist agents aren´t necessarily doing a great job on behalf of the artist.

For example I wanted to purchase some Art Garfunkel albums via iTunes, but most of them were not available and some are only available as partial albums!

Incidentally the same applies to even Simon and Garfunkel albums.

I try so hard to convince my friends to stop pirating music and purchase it, but it should be very easy for them to purchase, and that´s not always the case at the moment.

One of the interesting things happening is that artists are selling directly to customers. I recently purchased some albums from Richard Marx, who had some big hits in the 80s. I purchased directly from his website - it cost me about $8US an album and I did it, even though I wasn´t sure how good the albums would be (they were well worth the money) because I want to support artists who are working without what Paul Simon called the "whores on 7th Avenue".

I full agree on everything.

I installed I-tunes now for that song, it crashed after a few minutes.
2nd try then, well I can not find this Paul Simon song.

I think Paul is really destroying his career, if this is THE ONLY way he releases his albums.

i´m installing i-tunes now. but you can only play iTunes on an iPod right? Will it play on the computer.

Such gorgeous lyrics though, I especially Love the verse and buying love in a bargain store. And it´s funny to see the same themes running through so many of the songs he´s written recently.

Hi Nikki,it does have a similar use of language to that used Love in Hard Times, and explores similar themes in my opinion. And yes,the lyrics do sound lovely. I want to HEAR IT! So frustrating!

Ok I missed this thread and had my rant on another one. I´m a big fan of Mac and iTunes generally and usually anything Mac is very user friendly. but this business of alerting you of releases which when you try to buy its only available in the US, and then they send you back to your own iTunes which doesn´t have it - it´s disgraceful. Initially when the PS box set came out and I wanted to get the bonus songs without having to buy the albums the smae thing happened - I contacted itunes and eventually they came out on the local iTunes - so I suggest we try that.

Nikki - If (and when itunes has the song for your area) you can put it on a CD and you should be able to put it on an MP3 player

Ok folks !

Lots of frustration and it is fully understandable.

We are maybe 25 on this planet who care much about a new Paulo song, and they make it available to a small portion of them.

Please visit the appropriate section of this site for the song. I made it quick, so maybe someone can post a free-background noise eventually.

It does not look as if WB is involved in this release IMHO.

Ok, after all, it is good that we are in 2009. These are the days of miracle and wonders....let´s discuss now !

See you.

By the way, does anyone know if I can post the original mp4 ? Maybe it is protected by the iTunes software...?

Thanks a lot Mog! I have no idea about the protection of the original mp4. I should say you bought it so it´s your´s....

Parts of the song remind me of the song that Paul played at the Gershwin Prize for Stevie Wonder. I Love the song and the lyrics. It looks like the new songs are just Paul and his guitar, a poet and a one man band... :)

This comes so out of nowhere that it´s really a Surprise.
"Love In Hard Times" indeed runs along similar lines, from what I read in the lyrics to this new one.
Two songs is already 1/5th of an albums worth of songs.
He probably has already written a few more. Now if he were to meet with Nguini, Khumalo, Gadd and engineer Andy Smith in the studio, the next album surely wouldn´t be too far away.

Even with the song being a somewhat limited release when it comes to regions, I´m pretty certain that this is just a sign of things to come, a first hint at a forthcoming release that would then be widely available.
Kudos to Paul Simon for trying out this "new" method. Hopefully, the CD release of the next album will be at some point between now and next spring.
