 | I apologise in advance for this Off Topic Question, but I thought someone in our little community may have an answer to my query. About 8 months ago,I bought a brand new sealed copy of the 1962 movie ´Mutiny on the Bounty´. It was purchased from Ebay and arrived without a hitch. This movie is a 2 disc set and I put both discs in my 5 disc carousel DVD player and watched it without any problem-in fact I watched it more than a few times for a couple of weeks, but subsequently I purchased a new DVD/HDD recorder,my 5 disc player fell into disuse. The problem is,is that I left 5 discs in the Old player, for months, literally, and upon retrieving the discs from the machine to watch again, the first disc of the 2 disc set would not play!! This disc is not scratched or dirty and the 4 other discs left in the player all work perfectly fine. My question is-Apart from mishandling a disc physically,is there any way to corrupt the information on a disc without even touching it? Thanks for any help you might offer guys.

 | Hi Ian
It is strange that a bought DVD will not work anylonger after 8 months. I think you might get an replacement.
What can happens with discs is that if they are not glued together very well on the border, air can come in between the layers and a oxydation process will start. But this takes many many years normaly - up to 100.

 | Hi Ian, I am sorry about this since it is a good movie, with Marlon Brando having about half of his weight in recent years.
There is a good remake from 1984 which is a rare thing, since remakes normally are bad.
Nice weekend though! | | | | Ian

 | Thanks for that link Bodo. Very interesting, and a little alarming too. This is a very perplexing mystery. The disc looks fine, but just won´t play, while it´s sister disc(also left in the player) plays perfectly. Given what they said about heat having a very negative effect, that´s probably where I would put my money,as the weather here is hot 9 months of the year with temperatures between 35 to 42 degrees celcius not uncommon during summer. Way over the recommended 20 degree max they suggest. Then again, why have none of my other discs ever been affected? I bought my first CD´s in 1985 and just recently I noticed the silver layer deteriorating at the outer and inner edges of many of my earliest discs. I noticed this, coincidentally, when I played Paul Simon´s Greatest Hits Etc recently and was shocked to find I could see through the disc in places. It hasn´t,as yet,had any effect on the sound or performance though. I think I will attempt to return this DVD though. | | | | Ian

 | Hi Klausi,I have loved that movie ever since I saw it as a child on television. The 1984 movie called ´The Bounty´ is excellent! A very powerful film that stars Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins, both looking very young in the film. Those films, and the story me the Bounty itself, appeals to me,because I have a keen interest in both the 18th,19th centuries in general, and sailing vessels from the same period. | | | | |
