 | Hey I´m new here. Wondering if there´s any obsessive record collectors who can point me in the right direction.
I´m looking to embellish my Paul Simon [CD] collection pretty soon - starting off with Rhythm Of The Saints (which I lost my copy of a while back!).
I´m aware that there are remastered and expanded releases of all his albums as of recent years but I´m somewhat wary of these as various sources suggest today´s digital remastering can either be beneficial or detrimental to the finished result, pretty much depending on who´s done it! So I guess my first question is, anybody bought the ´Saints´ remaster? How does it compare to the original? It wouldn´t make a difference but I´m tempted by those juicy bonus tracks :P.
And the other thing - I keep stumbling across these Japanese Vinyl Replica CDs, but can´t seem to find out too much about them. What are they? Should I choose one over a remaster? And fundamentally, why?
Here´s another thing that interests me. The Rhythm Of The Saints ´Vinyl Replica CD´ has a different track listing to the original record (and in fact seems to have replaced some of the original tracks with borrowed tracks from other albums! :S)
Original:
1. The Obvious Child
2. Can´t Run But
3. The Coast
4. Proof
5. Further To Fly
6. She Moves On
7. Born At The Right Time
8. Cool, Cool River
9. Spirit Voices
10. Rhythm Of The Saints
Vinyl replica:
1. Obvious Child
2. Boy In The Bubble
3. She Moves On
4. Kodachrome
5. Born At The Right Time
6. Train In The Distance
7. Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
8. I Know What I Know
9. Cool Cool River
10. Bridge Over Troubled Water
11. Proof
12. Coast
13. Graceland
14. Further To Fly
I´m just curious really as to why this is and hoping somebody knows something I don´t. This is my favorite PS album, and I´m all for hearing it in higher quality but don´t wanna be disappointed by a bad remaster (although a good one would be well received! Not to mention cost-effective...).
Much appreciated,
C

 | Hi C,the track listing for the ´replica´ CD,appears to be the setlist from the ´Born At The Right Time´ and CP91?? Up until ´Further To Fly´ anyway. Peculiar! As for the quality of the remastered discs,I don´t have all of them yet,but my remastered and expanded ´One Trick Pony´ and ´Hearts And Bones´ discs both sound superior to my original discs with better detailed highs, reduced tape hiss and overall, both are louder. Sorry I can´t be more precise with either query. |

 | I just did a ´side by side´ comparison of my two Hearts And Bones CD´s. The first one was a Japanese import I purchased in 1986,and the other is the remastered and expanded title I bought a couple of years ago. The difference is quite profound actually. In my previous post I mentioned the increased high frequency response, but I neglected to mention the Bass! which is dramatically more powerful on the newer disc. I would imagine ROTS will benefit from the remastering in the same fashion,as well as the bonus tracks. Go for it! |

 | I agree with Ian.
The rematered Paul Simon CD´s are well worth the investment - plus the bonus of some additional tracks.
The best way to get these is the complete boxed set of all CD from Paul Simon thru to You´re The One. You can get these from Amazon or CD Universe (which was way cheaper when I searched and bought).
I have just got my copy of Simon & Garfunkel Live 1969 from Amazon. I had seen mixed reviews about this so had gotten around to getting it. But I must say am quite impressed. Well worth it. |

 | Thanks everyone, that´s extremely helpful. I´ll go with the remasters! And Gerard, you´ve refreshed my memory about that concert - I´ve heard only a few tracks from the 1969 performance and have always been consistently impressed. Although my personal preference still remains with New York City, 1967. Highly recommended if you haven´t got a copy already. I´ll have to add the 1969 concert to my list - I just bought the increasingly rare PS´s Concert In The Park on video and I´ve gotta watch my budget! |

 | Hi C,can I ask what a copy of The Concert In The Park video sells for these days? Is it possible to get it brand new anymore? Seeing as though Warners in their wisdom don´t seem to be planning a dvd release anytime soon,I´d like to buy a brand new copy on vhs and immediately copy it to disc. My copy is 17 years Old and has seen better days unfortunately:-( |

 | Hi Ian, I was curious if there are still VHS tapes available and did a little research. At the big stores like HMV there is nothing but on Amazon.co.uk I found 3 VHS videos, used but they seem in very good condition.
Here is the link:
