 | mog, are you really sure that you are a Paul Simon fan? To be honest, I never read a positive comment about Paul Simon from your site. |

 | Is this a joke ?
You mean comments on this site ?
I am just a critical person, an independant spirit...when it is good, I say it, when it is bad, I say it too.
Whatever goes out from Simon does not mean immediately genius for me.
I think I do qualify as a Simon fan ! |

 | Omg Mog,you are an independent thinker, and that´s an admirable quality to be sure, but what is it that you find ´boring´ about Paul´s performance? Now I´m sadly not much of an independent thinker-not a very vociferous one anyway, but I am a musical snob and I have never been able to understand some of the criticism I have heard levelled at Paul Simon and his music. Words like ´wimpy´,´wussy´,and... ´boring´ have been used by non Paul Simon fans and I always do my best to convince them otherwise, but you ARE a Paul Simon fan,and I´m at a complete loss how to respond, although you would never believe it by this long text;-) I guess I just want to hear or understand exactly what it is that you find boring about this particular performance. I suppose if Paul had his band with him,he may have been able to do a great, say, ´Sir Duke´,but he was alone with his guitar, and chose a song with lyrics and music that he felt he could do justice to. In my eyes and ears he succeeded, but not to yours. Why is it that,do you think? |

 | I thought his performance was just fine for a lone voice and guitar. Typically Paul Simon (reminded me of 10 years on Oprah Winfrey show).
Was this a Stevie Wonder song. |

 | Hi Gerard, yes it is a Stevie Wonder song. It´s not only Paul´s singing that is fine, but his beautiful, tasteful and deftly fingerpicked guitar that deserves special mention. |

 | Ok, ok...you are about to convince me !!
Seriously, I was bored by my first listenings. I don´t know...it reminds me at times of Love in Hard Times(yawn).
I do not play the guitar, but I try to imagine the complex fingerpicking and chords style at works, but...there is no strong melody to my ears, no deep groove that really take me.
On th other hand, I need to be frank: I am not super familiar with the original track, but will pay attention in the next few days and recompare with Paul´s version.
By the way, I have always *loved* the Surfer Girl thing (+ the falsetto) !! Another acoustic performance I love is the "Take Me To The Mardi Gras" that he did a few years ago I think for Katrina. I know...it is not the same, but for me it is the difference between something attractive to my ears and a...yawn.
Anyway, this is just a cover. As usual, I am content that Paul was a performer and that he played in front of Stevie and Barack. |

 | Yeah, that´s cool Mog. Give it a few more listens and the songs melody will start to make sense, but if you still don´t like it,then that´s okay too. To each his own,to abuse an Old cliche. Actually there is one short line of melody in that performance, that sounds remarkably like a melodic phrase in Paul´s own ´That´s Where I Belong´. It´s the part that goes ´...sound becomes a song...´. Have a listen to both songs and see if you can pick it? |

 | Hello Mog,
May I give my opinion, too. For me it´s not the fact that you are critical about it that is a little bit offensive, it´s they way you wrote it. You just throw in "Completely boring!" and that´s it. When you explain it like you did later, I can relate to it and of course everbody has his or her tastes. For me it is very much about how you say it that shows respect or not. I hope you know what I mean.

 | I must on first listening i would have said the same as Mog, but I have thought that with a lot of Pauls songs on YTo and Surprise. I am now aware its my tone deafness that causes this reaction and the more I listen to it the better it becomes esp using ear phones and watching intently.
But I Love his songs with a bit of oomph eg Outrageous, Ace in a hole, SCAATY (of course:) ), YCCMA, Mardi Gras etc.
Keep up the controversial remarks Mog, they keep all us besotted fans on our toes, and makes us think on why PS music means so much |

 | I have managed to download the whole ceremony in high quality video. It was available on dime, but a few hours later it was banned (don´t know why). If people here are interested, I can extract the Paul-segment and share it... just let me know... |
