 | They are Edie Brickell and Harper Simon with Sean Lennon & others. Most of the songs are written by Edie & Harper. The lyrics make me wonder if there is major trouble in the marriage. Except for two songs they are all pretty much downers. One song (Maximo) includes the lines "you held me back to keep from getting Old & your Love was good but faded like a dream. Most of them follow this mood. Also Harper thanks everyone--parents, siblings, Edie, Carrie & others. Edie thanks only Harper and two names I don´t recognize. I also notice Paul isn´t wearing his wedding ring lately. Has anyone else listened to the CD?

 | I think there´s no sense in trying ot infer things about Paul Simon´s marriage from his songs (or those of his wife and son).
I really The Heavy Circles - Better and Ready to Play are great. |

 | I agree, and besides Paul has hardly ever worn his wedding ring or as far as I can tell from the photos that have been taken! |

 | Humm...Suzi´s path of questioning does not take me to theories about Simon´s current mariage, but it reminds me that taking a look at lyrics could be interesting.
Paul has shown us that some his stuff could be highly autobiographical (e.g. Hearts And Bones album), so I would not say that one cannot infer something about his life or mariage from time to time from his lyrics.
Was it at the Barnes and Nobles event that Simon began by saying that the lyrics book felt like his life ? |

 | If it is autobiographical, why do you think it is about Paul & Edie? Could just as easily be about Harper. |

 | The thing that most made me think of Paul and Edie was the "you held me back to keep from getting Old" line. I also think the rest of the CD except for the two songs sound more Edie than Harper. Just the way it struck me. |

 | I don´t think you should read too much into the lyrics.
By the way: Most of the songs from the Heavy Circles project were written around 2004/2005. The songs from Edies last CD with the New Bohemians "Stranger Things" were written in 2006 and they sound a lot more optimistic. Maybe it depends on whom she is working with?
And even if there is something autobiografical, that´s the way it is. Sometimes everything is gourgous and sometimes it is not that good. And my husband and I don´t were our wedding rings and that is no sign, that we don´t get along well.

 | Blimey...I keep having HUGE gaps in my posts of late...lol
Anyway, I wouldn´t read much into this at all Suzie. Niether Paul or Edie wear their rings much. And it´s not uncommon for couples not too.
Harper, when he started this project, had reacently ended a long relationship and so that´s going to have an effect on his songs.
And if there was a really terrible problem in their marriage I think they´d have been divorced by now, given Paul´s own record in the past. Harper never stopped Paul and Peg from getting divorced.
I have also found this really nice interview with Harper and Edie and this may give you a better feeling about the album.
Personally I think it´s a great album and doesn´t make me think there are any problems in their marriage.

 | Edie says: “When Harper sent me the tapes of the first songs that he produced,” Brickell recalls, “I was playing them in the kitchen and Paul came in and said, ‘What’s this?’ I told him. He said, ‘You guys sound great. Harper produced this?’ He was beaming. He was thrilled."
Here´s the article in The Times (UK).

 | Thank you for mentioning The Heavy Circles album.
"Ready To Play" is my favourite, and to me it´s like the best song Edie has recorded in years - well, maybe with the exception of "Millie" that was posted a while ago on one of her myspace pages.
I´ve been wondering about the opening song, "Henri". Is it about a French painter by the name of Henri, and if so, what´s his last name?
At least, the lyrics all sound like descriptions of different paintings the man (supposedly) has drawn.
Thank you for your help in figuring out, who it is. |

 | I think it´s Henri Matisse. He is a surrealist painter. |

 | Thank you Mimi. I´ll try fitting the lines from the song to his paintings when I find the time. |
