Hi, I haven´t been on this site for quite some time - and it always seems to be that way, I only check in every now and then. I consider myself to be a very great fan of Paul´s music, I listen to it all the time... But I just don´t have the energy or the time or the obsessive need (I know this sounds nasty and unfriendly but that´s really not how it´s meant to sound!) to be thinking about it or writing about it or analysing every aspect of it almost every day, like many of you seem to be doing. What I am saying is, when I am on this site, I feel like a very different fan, like I am on another level than a lot of you guys. Like I don´t care as much, even. And still I couldn`t live without Paul`s music, it`s such a big part of my life. His music is kind of the soundtrack to my life. As a teenager I fell in Love with Sounds Of Silence, the feeling evocated in that song, the estranged feeling, I think almost any teenager feels like that at some time. And as I grow older, I seem to grow into Pauls music more and more. With every new album there was instant recognition on my part (with the exception of The Rhythm Of The Saints, alas ` but I am glad to say that was only a glitch, I even listen to that album now). I am especially fond of his lyrics; they speak to me again and again, even as I think I`ve heard everything now, new meanings come to light almost every time I listen to his music. So sometimes when I come on the forum and read the postings, it seems to me to be about such trivial things. About Paul`s wife for instance, or about whether Paul is left- or righthandedâ?¦ There`s a lot of practical sharing of information too, but sometimes it feels like a gossip forum. I don`t mean to give offence, I really wouldn`t want to be banned and already I am not one to post very often. I was just wondering why I don`t visit this site very often, and wanted to get this off my chest and see if there`s maybe someone else out there who feels the same?

No - you sum it up for me very well. I´ve been using this for a couple of years now and still don´t feel like I belong. Thanks for articulating this.

When this site started there was a close group of fans which got close because we were often in the chatroom and had a lot of fun. There were of course also discussions, mostly about the "well-known" subject..;-)
The group of fans who come on this board changed over the years. I still have contact with some fans from the early years, they have become good friends:)

I think it´s difficult on almost every board, you often see the same group of people who post, a lot come and visit the forum, post a few times but then loose interest or are annoyed about something. Also gossip is on almost every forum, but sometimes gossip can be funny, when you tell it with some humour...;-)
That´s what I miss mostly on this forum these days, the good humour we had in the early days...

I agree - even though I´m relatively new on the forum (I think I first visited 2.5 years ago) I can imagine what you mean by missing the good humour. There are some really awesome people on this site, but from time to time I´ve found that people can be quite cold to others, especially newcomers. This hasn´t been a personal experience but it´s certainly noticeable, and I think that´s part of what puts people off coming here. If you´re new and you try to start a conversation but no-one bothers replying for days, or if you ask an obvious question and people tell you that it´s been asked too many times before, it can be a little off-putting.

For me, I still read and post stuff just cos it´s a great site which should be kept going strong, even if the news on Paul is running a little low. And also because I´m a relatively new fan there´s always something new to find out, even if it´s from a seemingly trivial comment someone makes.

Hi Anne-Mie

Very well said, thats all true.

I think the french forum today is more like this forum was 3-4 years ago. Now it is not an intime place anylonger. But what I can see is, that this also happened to the Paul Simon newsgroup (well, it is very quiet now there). Something has changed...or, everything is different, but nothing has changed? ;-)

Maybe it would be a good idea to make a ´newbies´ forum? (just an idea), where everyone can post, and a special forum for more interesting discussions (also fun) - just something without all the usual questions about his wife, S&G rivalisations and trivial questions. ??

I could make that, just a forum where you have to ask the moderators to join in. And others only can read.

How about an "off-topic" thread? Maybe that would re-ignite the community, and the humour.

In fact, I think I´ll start it now...

New X-Files movie confirmed - how brilliant is that!? Maybe they can get PS to do the soundtrack.

Hi Scott

Yep, you got my attention :-)
No joke, just 2 days ago I thought what happened to these 2 actors...

The 1th x-files movie was crap IMO.

No way!! The first film was great. But the series´ that followed it went downhill fast. The new film will be shot in Vancouver - where the first five moody & atmospheric series were filmed.

David Duchovny can currently be found in the very funny Californication (kind of a Sex in the City for men). Gillian Anderson was abducted by aliens after the X-Files finished and hasn´t been seen since

Yes and if we are still so active on the French forum it´s, as Bodo suggested, because we talk about many different things and I must admit rarely about Paul now ! ;-) And we have an other advantage there : we have already organized a week-end where the most of us could meet (and we hope to do it again)and so, we still have many anecdotes to share :-)
But we are open minded and we can well talk about Paul again if necessary ! lol !

Hi, I can just confirm my friends´s posts....
Last July, Mapa and her children came back in Paris and we enjoy to share another moment together, in a great park, near Paris, and meet Natacha and her family, who was a newcomer on the forum to speak about Paul and... other things ;-)

You are welcome on the French forum...
You speak all much better in French than me in English...:-)

I agree with everybody : not often the case, so worth mentioning!

I hesitated for months before registering and posting on the forum over a year ago. Why ? It is true that posting on the French forum seemed intimidating at first, not because of the sometime trivial subjects discussed, but because it sounded to me like everyone knew each other. But once I started I must admit I met a warm welcome and it was easy to keep going.

Anne-Mie, although I understand what you say it would be a bit idealistic to imagine Paul Simon´s fans ´identical´, regardless of their age, backgroung, etc... I was a rather ´stupid´ (meaning excessive) fan 20 years ago, eager for any Paul´s news whether personal or musical, ready to buy or trade any bootleg, video, and so on...it is not the case today. And I still consider myself a ´real´ Paul Simon´fan.

Like you, I am annoyed sometimes to see ´stupid´ polls or threads on this forum but if it is the price to pay to have from time to time, relevant and interesting information on Paul, I am willing to accept.

I would like to ask what the other people on this forum think about Bodo´s idea of changing the forum and if they have other ideas.

I would like to have a forum with some more options, different topics, like one where we can post the information we find, one about Paul´s music, one with general stuff, and maybe one with related stuff like Edie Brickell´s and Harper´s music. And maybe one where we can talk about trading music, finding tabs, covers etc.

I just posted some info about a thesis in the news section, but imo it would be handy if there is also a place to put it on the forum without starting a new thread, where people can respond to it.

Take a look at the forum layout on the AG site. They have a number of different sub-forums there. I think that works well as you can just visit the forums that interest you and ignore the rest.
