Hey folks - check this out, an album that has excerpts of Paul talking about various parts of his career and plenty of songs esp from Surprise. For those of us in an "essential Paul Simon" free zone.

looks interesting, but when I log in to Itunes, it says it´s £1500, or could be £15 - have you downloaded it?
Thanks

Just listening to it at the moment. It should only be 9.99 Euro for the whole album. The talking parts are quite interesting some you´d have heard before others appear to be new. The songs are not the usual versions either. Worth getting I think.

The songs are not the usual versions?? Are you sure about that? What songs are on that CD?

Well quite a few from Surprise but don´t seem the exact same - they are titled iTunes original versions - Hey school girl (live), SOS(live), SSSaway, MAJDBTSY, DOTSOHS. Late greatJA and Darling Lorraine don´t have anything written beside them. F&D sounds very different...
There are 26 tracks, each song interspaced by PS talking, no interviewer.

Some clarity:

(1) The interview bits appear to be from the KCRW show Paul did last year, called New Ground. Not sure exactly when it was recorded (more on that below). I think there might be more here than originally broadcast, but I haven´t compared.

(2) Some of the songs are album versions. You´re stucking buying stuff you already have.

(3) Some of the songs are existing live versions - the S&G stuff, I think is from the OF: LOS set or from the Grammys (SOS, I think - need to listen to the whole thing).

(4) Some songs are new, live performances, presumably done at KCRW. The arrangements (of Diamonds and HCYLITNE particularly) suggest early in the tour, which makes sense because New Ground with Paul Simon was broadcast on September 6, 2006: http://www.kcrw.com/music/programs/gz/gz060902paul
_simon.

(5) At the end of that show, the host (Chris Douridas) made reference to the fact that iTunes exclusive performances would be made available "this fall," which means fall one year later in PST (Paul Simon Time).

Anyhow, the performances are good, the interview (well, the answers - the questions are left out, at least the for the first few tracks) is really good and there´s enough new stuff to justify the $9.99 price tag. Enjoy it.

This is how iTunes describe the album:
iTunes Originals presents a career retrospective of Paul Simon, in which he talks about his music and performs six exclusive live versions of some of his most well-known songs, including "Slip Slidin´ Away."

I bought the complete album and am delighted about it. However I think iTunes are very sneaky that now you cant buy any of the spoken parts separately which you could do a week ago. I t also explains why Essential PS is not available on the European iTunes

In my opinion, this piece is not worth purchasing.

The interview segments are from a show that I downloaded here a year ago for free. I can´t remember which one it was, but it was the one where Paul talked about being in England where he went to the record store in Denmark to look at the charts to see if Sounds Of Silence had charted, and he looked at the songs one by one untill SOS came up.

The live songs are:

Father Daughter
Slip Slidin´ Away
Me and Julio
Diamonds
Northeast
Outrageous

All very similar to the BBC 2006 studio session that are available here. The rest of the songs are the original version.
