on the poll on this site people are saying paul´s best decade is the 80s.heres the thing;on the fan site i have on bebo
( http://slip-slidin-away.bebo.com )
i have posted a similar poll and another about pauls best album. now on the album poll Graceland is winning 100% but theres not a single vote for the 80s on the decades poll! are people voting for the 80s on this site purely based on the success of graceland? or do people think that pauls best work came out of those 10 years?? or am i thinking too much?? :-)

Well, Graceland aside, wasn´t the 80s also the decade of OTP and H&B? To me those three albums def all count in the top half of Paul´s albums (difficult as it is to try and rank them against each other). Though Paul´s earlier albums do contain some of his best tracks, I don´t think any of them have the sort of perfect overall sophistication which is the trademark of his later albums. And true, the 90s and the new millenium have seen some great work from Paul too, but not as frequently as in the 80s?

And then, on a completely different note, appearance-wise the 80s would have to be Paul´s best decade too. You only have to watch the CP81 concert to appreciate.

Totally agree with you there. Josh, in Ireland there was very little exposure to H&B and none to OTP - everyone wanted a new S&G album. At the time Art Garfunkel was more popular it seemed.

Hm, from the number of hit songs he wrote i would say the 70´s are his best decade.

Yes, but so many of his non-hit (maybe even flop) songs count among his best right? So then it depends on whether best decade refers to the commercial success of his releases

I really can´t say it.

From todays view he will be remembered best about Graceland (not H&B and not OTP...) - but are the 80´s really his best decade of Songwriting?

In the 70´s he only released 3-4 albums (ok, I count OTP to his 70´s work, because the music was written much earlier than 1980 and from the style it is closer to his 70´s music), but every of these albums includes 1-2 all-time-favourite songs

The question is (without asking about the ´commercial´ success) which of these songs would you miss more?

Me and Julio
Mother And Child Reunion
50 ways
Kodachrome
American Tune
Still crazy
Late In The Evening
Loves Me Like A Rock
Gone at last
Slip Sliding Away
Something So Right

or

Hearts And Bones
Train In The Distance (?)
Rene And Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War(?)
Graceland
You Can Call Me Al
Diamonds
Boy in the Bubble
The Coast
The Obvious Child
Proof

(now I count ROTS to the 80´s ...written in 1989/90 - but these albums fit together)

Ok I´d miss the first lot like I´d miss any major public thing like your original currency when the Euro came in something like that or favourite TV show. The second lot would be more like losing a private thing maybe your favourite book or place something that was a comfort. Basically I suppose the second lot to me anyway are deeper and therefore more meaning ful.

Well, I´d miss them all, that´s for sure :) I don´t remember if I voted in that poll, but I think all his decades are the best for a lot of different reasons. How do you feel?

Mmm I agree, that´s a very precise way of putting it Scaaty. And also, when I say that the 80s was better, I´m not so much considering the number of fantastic individual songs from each decade as I am the overall quality of each album. Weighing the good songs against each other is just too hard. How could you ever pick between Something So Right and H&B for example? Plus the musical styles are so different it´s almost impossible to compare on a level plane. But if you take the albums as a whole, I reckon with each of the 70s albums, there are a few songs on each which he really could have given a miss on. Whereas with the later albums I don´t think there isn´t so much of a wide range in quality. Pretty much all of the songs are indispensable. So that´s why to me the 80s is better. It´s all just a matter of personal taste of course. I Love Cars Are Cars and hate Paranoia Blues, but it could easily be the other way around for someone else.

i don´t think i can pick a best decade. he´s been more successful in some but for me its the songs. he has been so consistant in his quality of writing.
