I wonder why some albums so disliked.

So I want to know - which one is the most underrated albums by his own fans?
Hearts And Bones was a big flop - but the fans do like the album very much today.
Still crazy won the grammy for ´best album of the year´...and today only 2,2% do like it.
I personaly think that "Songs From The Capeman" is his most underrated work. The songs are all brilliant (maybe the show wasn´t, I have never seen it), but compared to everything he has written later I think he did the best job on that songs.

I will restart that poll - but with a small difference, you can vote for your most favourite albums (to take just 1 is very hard, makes it impossible for your 2nd choice to get some points)

I agree 100% with you about "Songs From The Capeman". And the about the impossibility of having just one favorite...

I absolutly agree Bodo. ´Capeman´ contains some of Paul´s most eclectic compositions. From the gorgous commercial Possibilities of Satin Summer Nights and Bernadette to the highly structured angularity of Can I Forgive Him?.And that´s not even mentioning Time is an Ocean which I would dearly Love to hear Paul sing, even though the version on the album is powerfully performed as it is.Great album, but most reviews I thought were reasonably positive. One Trick Pony I also think is underrated. Oh Marion just floors me...

Was Hearts And Bones really a flop? That´s shocking! It´s fantastic! The last thirty seconds or so of "Train In The Distance" is truly inspired. Only Simon.

H&B did not sell well even tho it contains some of Paul´s finest songs. The guitar riff to the title track is a joy to play, and the fact that the whole song revolves around just 3 chords and their minors - E A and B reveals his need to unload the emotional burden he carries. This is in stark contrast to his more usual sophistication where the beauty of the music he is capable of creating sometimes over elaborates.
Yet, to my mind, Hearts And Bones is Paul Simon the songwriter at his deepest best, and tho he went on to write exceptional songs, he never approached this stunning level again.

I´ve just been listening to an Old BBC interview with Artie and its obvious why H&B was a flop. If Artie had been allowed to do great things with those songs, if paul hadn´t been so niggardly then there would have been 5 million sold instead of just 50,000......

I have heard that interview with Art,too. Well, the wonder of some two part harmonies...

In fact I do think that it had an influence that the album was announced as the new S&G Album and then turned out to be a PS Solo album. Paul got some really bad personal attacks in the papers because he kicked of poor Artie. Maybe it would have sold more as a S&G Album but I am afraid not because Artie would have contributed so much to the quality.

And for the polls - I don´t think you can say that Nobody likes these albums as long as you can only pick one as your favourite. That is one of the reasons that I usually don´t take part in those polls. I can´t decide which one I like best.

I find that Songs From The Capeman is one of Paul´s greatest albums.
