 | During the 1981 Concert In Central Park, this line was cheered at.
Why?
It had nver been cheered at before, and was not cheered at again at other concerts until after the release of the album of the concert. Not again during the tour.
Watching the DVD, I can see no gestures or extra lighting that would encourage the crowed to cheer at this line.
Did the drowed really believe they were being "spoken to" during this line? Why only the New York crowd and not the Vancouver, Tokio, Paris or London crowds during the tour?
Nowerdays, the line is cheered at at all concerts (PS and SG at least. Less so at AG) and that is regardless of the number of people present. 2,000 maybe less is often more appropriate!
So why in 1981 for the first time?
Can anybody solve this conundrum?!

 | Sorry everyone, I wrote this twice, because I thought the first entry had not been posted. One answer will be enough! Just ignore the other entry with the same title! Cheers. |

 | Because, as a people, they were more than 10,000. |

 | There´s a really massive, almost deafening cheer at that line in CP91, and no matter how many times I hear it I can´t help but smile to myself each time I listen to the CD - I find it kind of amusing :-) |

 | I think its wonderful. An awe inspiring moment really, I think its just as remarkable when Paul sings it solo on his Concert In The Park album.
He may tinker with the words, say, half million people maybe more, but probably best not to.

 | I remember the cheering being commented in the media at the time (when they played in Ireland). I suppose it was the first major reunion concert and many people were hoping for a reconciliation.
Personally I cringe now when the roar comes as it is so predictable. I have actually considered starting a campaign that seasoned PS fans refuse to respond to the line.
There is one bootleg of SOS, available on this site, where the person recording the song yells, it is deafening and I have to confess is the only PS recording that I´ve deliberately removed from my iPod! |

 | Agreed, but this wasn´t the first time the song had been played in front of ten thousand people! And during the rest of the tour there was no further cheering. Only after the subsequent release of the record of the concert did the cheer become widespread.
I sort of imagined that there may have been another reason. Maybe on a leaflet or concert programme, or maybe during interviews before the concert. I just think it´ sweird that it happened in New York, and not elsewhere.
I often hear cheers during concert recordings, and only when seen on a screen do the cheers make sense....(like the artist pulling a face, dropping something or falling over.) So here, when I finally got to see the concert instead of only hearing it I was hoping to see Paul maybe gesturing, or the crowd being "lit up", but.....nothing. Life´s full of mysteries, I suppose. |

 | They cheered because they were a huge crowd. |

I think it would be weird if this happens for the first time outside of NY - as S&G are native NY citizen.
And the reunion concert was really something special..the biggest concert in their life until that day...much bigger than ever before.

 | Yeah I got it too.
I mean, that´s the logical reason. However I was hoping for more. You know, someone who was there perhaps mentioning that on the morning of the concert someone on the radio mentioned it would be a great idea to cheer when they sang that line.....
I am a hopeless romantic you know. Spontaneous, unplanned cheering at this line seems too simple. I mean....there were barely any cheers for "Looking down on Central Park" during "A Heart In New York". But maybe that´s because Artie sang it...... |

 | But in PS CP91 they cheer when he sings "a girl from new york city" so its not special really. |
