I thought that as we know what Paul`s first record he bought was, it might be fun to catalogue our own first purchases, and by that I mean with our own money and not mum and dads.

It would also be interesting to see if those purchases reflect our hero.

Mine are:

Single: You Can Call Me Al
Album: Paul Simon

Hmmm...I think the first album I bought on my own was some Bon Jovi album...Maybe "Keep The Faith", and I bought it on tape because the CD was too expensive for a little school girl, LOL :-) My first Paul album was The Capeman and at first I didn´t like it at all.

I seriously considered not participating in this thread (for reasons that are soon to be very clear), but here goes:
I got my first cd player as a confirmation gift in 1992. Before this I had purchased some tapes, but in which order, and for whose money I don´t recollect. I´m certain that one of the first ones was:
Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet.

Anyway, two days after my confirmation I went out and bought the following five cds:

Kriss Kross - Totally Crossed Out (a friend of mine broke it in half some years ago - with my blessing)
De la Soul - "Best of" (this one I sold about ten years ago)
Naughty by Nature - Soul Power (to my Surprise I just found out that I still own that one - must find out how to destroy it...)
Guns ´n´ Roses - Use your Illusion I
Queen - Greatest Hits 2

The last 2 will stay in my collection but I will probably never listen to them.

I´m happy to say that arround 1994 my short hip-hop period was well over and I began to purchase the S&G and PS back catalogue. Now my cd collection is heavily dominated by this and all official releases from Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Leonard Cohen, Catatonia, Cerys Matthews, Beatles and John Lennon plus a whole lot of Johnny Cash, McCartney, George Harrison, Solomon Burke, Blur and the new kings of Britpop/indie: Kaiser Chiefs. So I think I have improved and am beginning to forgive my self for those horrible first purchases :-)

My first S&G cd was SOS and I think my first PS was H&B or Graceland (I bought a lot in a short period of time when I first got on the right track). And I loved it from the start - and have ever since...

I spent a whole summer working (1974) on a farm to save up for a tape recorder (no radio attached) for the princely sum £17.99 and a tape cassette of Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks for £3.49. My parents then bought me Simon and Garfunkels greatest hits ( I had a copy i recorded from a friends record player) and the new Seekers greatest hits. They were my first three albums. The first Paul Simon album i bought was Hearts & Bones in 1983? with money my grandfather gave me for christmas. that cassette went missing about 5 years ago - i think it was left in the tape drive of our car when we sold it. i still have the case and bring it to every concert in case i get the opportunity to ask Paul to sign it.
As for the S&G greatest hits, that tape went missing within a year of buying it and i put my home recorded tape in the case and i have both to this day. I have the LP which I probably bought before Hearts & Bones. So I suppose that was the first PS album I bought my self.

Oy...my first CD was the soundtrack to the "South Park" tv show - and when my dad heard it, he very angrily took it back to the store :)

my first S&G was the Concert in Central Park, and my first Paul Simon solo was There Goes Rhymin Simon.
