 | I have all Pauls solo LPs on vinyl, up to and including ROTS, and sound wise none compares favourably to the re mastered editions. The only way the vinyl LP to me is superior is aesthetically. They look better( how i Love the heavy cardboard, gatefold sleeve of "Rhymin Simon"), the lyrics are easier to scan, the artwork better to appreciate, and they are nicer to hold. Yet they scratch easier, and not as portable as CDs. |

 | the PS songbook was like having Paul in the same room, echos and al esp where he stamping his footl, An Ep of The Boy In The Bubble was fantastic (once I set it to 45!!) and BOTW (from the t´other halfs dowry) was pretty good too. |

 | I have become obsessed with getting all his LPs since I found BOTW at a Goodwill. I think they sound so much better. I have PSRT, BOTW and The Concert in Central Park. I Love listening to them. |

 | If the LPs still sound better even after languishing in a charity shop,i wonder what was the point of issuing CDs, let alone re mastering them? |

 | Two reasons -
1. its a pain having to turn the album around half way through!!
2. can´t be easily loaded onto the iPod/mp3 player fancy equipment |

 | When I first purchased all the albums (up to ROTS, including the Songbook) I obtained early vinyl pressings. Then I got the CD versions of most of those albums, which (at least in the US) were admittedly made from poor masters.
More recently, by the time I purchased the remastered CDs, I had downsized to a lousy boombox player instead of a decent sound system. (Not to mention my likely hearing deterioration at age 49!) So it probably is true that the remastered CDs have far improved quality. So, I guess I cannot really make a fair comparison...
Nevertheless, despite all these variables, when playing vinyl compared to CDs, I can´t help feeling that there is a warmth and depth in the tone to vinyl that I think is lacking from digital. (I completely agree that the vinyl packaging was FAR superior.)
While CDs and ipods make it easier to listen to music, I find that this ease also makes it easier to be distracted. When I want to listen to a vinyl album, I have to really want to listen to the music, as opposed to driving or walking around with music playing. Maybe that is another factor...? |

 | the above should´ve said without fancy equipment.
Whatever about eyes richard I don´t think ears are failing at 49!! I agree about the wamth and depth of the sound.
I still have an Old hifi system frm the mid eighties but the turntable died a long time ago - too expensive to fix. I have since connected a CD player, MD player, iPod and last night returned a turntable to it. The sound is still amazing and hubby and myself had lovely evening listening to records from our teenage years.
Word of warning - young cats find the turntable fascinating!! |

 | Scaaty,Richard,
You both mention the warmth and depth in tone when listening to vinyl, and i agree. There is something offputting about the cold , compressed nature of CDs, but to me the sound really is better. Today you dont even need the CDs though. You just download from the internet. A "warmer" and more complete experience? |

I don´t think so.
Better to have a CD/LP in the hand than two on the "net" :) |

 | you left out mp3 peter... and
audio dvd
(with it´s 24 bit and 96khz it is maybe better than every LP or analogue tape)
although you can not get everything in that format..I wonder if they release a Audio DVD of Surprise. For YTO we had to wait about 1 year as far as I can remember.
