The Widnes station thing is a bit of a myth. Paul has said that it was mainly written in a guesthouse where he was staying when he was touring the area.

I read somewhere that the train was already in the station when he arrived there so he couldn´t possibly have written the song on the platform. A plaque was erected on the platform to commemerate the song...don´t know if it´s still there. Not too far from where I live...maybe one day I´ll make a trip out and go and see.

matthewsemple is right. Maybe the railway station written about was Widnes, but the song took a lot more time. He was away from London and longed to get there again.

Interesting enough, he said about it when singing it with AG in 1982, it was one of the most boring songs for him meanwhile.

But really, meanwhile he sings this great song very often again.

So meanwhile is relative...

Although comments are written in Japanse, there is a picture of the plaque.

Click on the "Widnes Station" in the menu.

Is that the new one or the orginal one? The first one was stolen during Paul´s 2000 (was it?) UK tour, and it has been replaced.

I´m not sure when the picture was taken.
According to the article in Liverpool Daily Post, latest plaque is 5th one.
