 | I´ve emailed the Grammy Foundation with my feelings about this years nominations and I know Nancy has followed suit. So if you´d also like to tell them what you think, in a polite way of course...lol! Here´s their addy...

 | That is a good idea - what were the other nominations by the way - so our e-mails can be informed? |

 | Well.. I personaly don´t see any sense in doing that :-) How many fans of other stars will do they same do you think?
It would Surprise me if they give a detailed answer why Paul did not get a nomination this time. |

 | Of course, we won´t get a reply. What could they possible say-"Golly, we screwed up...we will fix it"? It is just a way of letting off steam. |

 | Exactly Nancy. I´m not so daft as to expect anything different, but I am sure as hell going to let them know what I think...freedom of speech and all that! |

At least there is someone out there who agrees with us. |

 | Oh yeah, I read that article just after the news about his not getting a nomination came out. It made me happy- because they seemed to understand what happened. To me the whole incident just reflects poorly on the award; anyone who would choose Timberlake over Paul must be idiotic... |

 | I´m afraid I don´t it. Fans praise Paul for disregarding trends and following his own intuition by creating new and innovative works. Paul says he doesn´t care about being on the charts anymore (he´s even said something about not wanting to "write a song with a simple chorus just to please everybody"), and so he makes an album, Surprise, that is excellent in its own right and is probably immensely satisfying to both him and his loyal fans. But the price of such a work? It´s not exactly the sort of thing most people today are going to rush out and buy, and therefore, Surprise hasn´t had a huge impact. The result? No Grammy nominations, and no widespread recognition.
But is this really such a shock to us? I mean, despite their so-called mission to recognize the best the music industry has to offer, it´s obvious that the Grammys really is a popularity contest, and they have to represent what the majority of people are currently listening to and enjoying. Yes, that means a lot of garbage gets nominated (I´m looking at you, Justin Timberlake!), but it´s only fair that such awards represent what people are really interested in at the moment, for better or for worse. It wouldn´t make sense to me, even as an enthusiastic PS fan, for them to give an award to a relatively unheard of album just because it has a legendary name attached to it. If Paul wants to follow his heart and make different, challenging music, than I congratulate him for it -- but I guess what I´m trying to say is, as the Old saying goes, you can´t have your cake and eat it too. If you want the awards and the high sales, you need to play the game a bit.
Besides, it´s only fair that new, younger artists should have a chance at an award, right? Paul has piles of Grammys already, I´m sure he can live without another one. |

 | Brandy, the same was to be said of YTO, infact it wasn´t as good as Surprise, but it was still nominated. |

 | Actually, that´s very true, Micky. I never thought of that. But, wasn´t YTO given a bit more attention? |

 | Not really. Certainly here in the UK there was nothing except one lrg billboard poster. No interviews etc and he only played London on the tour.
Surprise has had far more attention... |

 | I see the album didn´t make the Rolling Stone top 50 albums list either....the cretins obviously have no taste. |

 | A question about it:
Has any guilt -for no nominations- the comercial sales tactic of WB?
The songs to release as single are little strange:
- First "Father and Daughter"(yes, it sounds good but already realised in 2002)
- Second That´s me (sure there are best songs in Surprise)
- Third Outrageus (Good choice, why so late?)
Moreover, this time only have seen one tipical videoclip in Outrageus, and it´s no so good like the videoclips from Graceland or TROTS.
One last argument: the best song of the album (perhaps of his career) has no promotion: "Wartime Prayers", inclusive "How can you ..." It´s curious that both have an unwritten (also especific)political message...
I think since "The Capeman", some managers has suspiction or prejudices with Simon lyrics...
But I agree, PS has grammys enough. |

 | I was not overly keen on that Outrageous video either. Am I missing something as it is really bad?
There is a video for Father & Daughter as an extra on The Wild Thornberry´s DVD but it features some footage from the film so probably could not be used without being re-edited.
And they should have released ´Once Upon A Time There Was An Ocean´ instead of ´That´s Me´ |
