Paul returning to "his roots" is a nonsensical concept.

Paul´s magic and talent lies in the fact that he is a chameleon, he is eclectic and he is on a journey of music, adding different influences to his palette. The Paul Simon debut album was a departure itself - recording in Jamaica on Motther & Child Reunion, using Hispanic music on Me & Julio, working with Los Incas on Duncan and Stephane Grapelli on Hobo´s Blues. In this sense, Surprise is a return to form in that he is doing what he has always done: collaborated.

As Paul himself has said in many interviews, he is no longer able to sit down with a guitar and just write a song - how can he be a genius at doing something that he has said he cannot do anymore?

You´re right Matthew, it´s this magic and talent that keep Paul´s albums fresh and worthwile listening. There are so many things to discover in his music and it opens your ear and mind for other music styles.

Most singer/songwriters don´t have that gift and don´t want to take the risk of losing fans.

That´s the problem that all artists have. Do I choose success or artistical relevance. So maybe you are one time successfull with something new, a lot of people want you to stay the same and that must be boring for a lot of artists. For me it is fascinating how Paul changes from album to album and sometimes he was lucky to get a big audience with it (Graceland) and sometimes he is not.

I was also very disappointed about the Grammies but if you take a look at the nominees at the main categories (with few exceptions) there is no place for relevant music anymore. The time, where the grammies were not only about sales are gone... Isn´t it very funny, in what categories they put Dylan and Knopfler? They just found no categorie where Surprise fitted in. Maybe Paul should do a Polka-Album next time, he could get a nomination there *g*
