 | (sorry JohnC, had to throw that in)
Paul was in great voice, the sound was excellent, the atmosphere in the end of the concert was great. Everything as I would have expected it, a great show from the viewpoint of music.
From the point of entertainment this was a ´nursing home´ show. As usually the audience was a mix of lame, unfriendly Old people, sitting with crossed arms and looking as if someone on stage is telling them how ugly they are, their girlfriends or family members sitting next to them and asking themself if they have ever heard one of these songs before - and a portion of real fans. But the majority counted to the first group.
During the first few songs it was like sitting in a cinema (with beer, but without popcorn). When Me and Julio started I stood up and danced in front of the stage - I could urge the young couple next to me also to stand up, and then about 200 people followed and the audience was standing - yeah. Looked like it would become a great show.
And then after 2 songs the security guys came and told person per person to sit down - a long painful process started because no one wanted to sit down, some of these unamusingly people urged the security to make more pressure on us, "he paid 60 Pounds and he wants to sit during the whole show, and no one is allowed to dance in front of him".
I showed to Paul that we want to dance, and he really reacted on it, he told us "Please, the people dancing here, sit down, maybe later"
That was it.
I do not know what was going on in Pauls mind, but somehow he has an absolute lack of feeling what is entertainment. At one show he asks people to stand up and dance, and 2 nights later he told the people to sit down.
Now the fun was over, everyone was sitting at there chairs, Paul played Loves Me Like A Rock, Graceland, That Was Your Mother.. audience was sleeping somewhere. I tried to stand up at my place, 2 idiots (sitting in front of me, can you believe that!) started a war over me until I gave up and sat down. I was more than frustrated, until that this has been the worst PS show I have ever visited.
I was not in the mood to start another try to get up the audience, so we have been sitting until Cecilia. Then some girls on the other site of the stage finally began to dance - I took the chance and ran over to them and was dancing there. Now all the other people also came back, a lady was dancing with me - finally the show became funny again. Uh, my mood changed - great.
Only one thing could destroy that all now - another slow song by Paul. Yes he started with ´The only living boy in NY´, and the security again took their positions. But this time they decided to let us stay (well, the officiall show had only 1 more song left, Diamonds... so maybe they thought we will sit down again when Paul will leave the stage, but that didn´t happen)
The rest of the show was great, we could dance troughout all encores, all the music lovers standing in the first rows, and they people with the killer-look had to stand up at their overpaid 125 Pounds first row tickets.
During You Can Call Me Al I wanted to give my cellphone to Paul. Actually I wanted to ask a security guy if he could handle it over to him, but these primitive humans somehow have not the ability to speak with normal people, they did not even let me ask. So when the 2nd chorus came Paul looked into the crowd and asked for cellphones, and I threw mine at him. Oh yes, what a failure - 3 security guys jumped over to me and I finally thought they gona throw me out of the place now. People around me explained to them that this was a game with Paul and he asked for the cellphones and and and... whatever, now I had a special security guy for me alone standing 50 centimeters in front of me, okay. Paul was so nice to do not give me back my cellphone, he sang for a second into it, and then he laid it somewhere on an amplifier back behind him. That was really nice, because after the show I had more problems than I ever thought to get back my own property. I asked one of the security orang-utans if they could give me the cellphone, or allow me to take it. The answer was simply NO. (hey, but they accepted a question from me, wow).
I had to cry to the guys working on stage for a few minutes until someone reacted on me (sure, they did not want to react because most people cried to them to get a setlist or something else from stage), but finally someone was so nice and gave me my cellphone back.
Thats it, but I am not frustrated, I am just sarcastic :-) The part of the show from Cecilia til the end was absolute great and I think later I will only remember the great things.
Although, I am not sure if I will ever go again to a seated Paul Simon concert (at least not in the UK ;-) )

 | Bodo - are you sure you were at the Paul Simon concert, at Wembley? :-) From the amazing reports I´ve heard and read from other people, it doesn´t sound like the same show! Only teasing - I think you enjoyed it really. I´m off to Birmingham now. | | | | Bodo Nov-11-2006, 17:14 GMT

 | :-) You got me.
No I really enjoyed it, I enjoyed the beginning and the time when we could stand for 2-3 songs, and I enjoyed the part from Cecilia till the end.
But I much more enjoyed to meet all the people at the concert, before, after and during the show. The people dancing around me have all been so fantastic lovely persons - during Cecilia we all held our arms around the person left and right of us.
Finally I went to Klausi´s Hotel and we stayed there at the bar until 2am | | | | Scaaty Nov-11-2006, 21:47 GMT

 | I have to agree with Bodo.
Awful, Awful, Awful.
And he forgot other two groups
1) The insane screamers
2) The random clappers
They show, to me, as OK. Paul´s not always "in the moment". You can so tell the songs he wants and doesn´t want to sing. He is absolutely exhausted by 50 ways.
But Duncan, Train In The Distance and the Surprise tracks (wartime prayers, oh my!) were stunning. | | | | Nikki Nov-12-2006, 04:38 GMT

 | Bodo, what´s this thing about the cell phones? You throw it up and he sings into it? This is the first I´ve heard of it...maybe its just a UK thing :) | | | | Nikki Nov-12-2006, 04:40 GMT

 | My son is ´guilty´ of posting a review of Manchester on the forum as well as in the ´add reviews´ (Matt R) - but the reason he did that was so that people could respond to it if they wanted to. Maybe that would be an idea - making it so that people can make a response to the reviews in the LIVE section - Bodo? | | | | Bodo Nov-12-2006, 14:59 GMT

 | You should know that when you stand up and everybody are doing it also, you are seriously blocking the view of those who were only able to get a B ticked and those who don´t stand tall. When everybody stood up, I could only see a crowd of people and ocassionaly a glimpse of Paul. I spent alot of money flying from Iceland and staying in London, only to see this concert, so thanks for destroying that for me. | | | | Bodo Nov-12-2006, 17:55 GMT
