The capeman only sales 50.000... Where is the problem? Have you really listen this album? For me is one of the bests (Graceland include).

You ask the wrong man Fingerprints, the Capeman is still one of my favourite albums. But 50.000 sounds really extrem low. That is only the US market? (even than the number is very low), but I believe worldwide it sold much more

I have heard a figure of about 95.000 copies in the US when it was still selling. Anyway it seems to be far away from Gold.

But I would not count it as a 100 percent Paul-Simon-Album. He did not sing not on all tracks, and all the lyrics were strongly connected to the story, much more than OTP.

He probably would have retired if the Capeman had been a success like Cats or Phantom of the Opera, which are still running somewhere. He stated before in 1997 to stop touring forever.

Excuse me Bodo. I agree with you. I don´t know really the exactly sales of the Capeman. In a biography of Simon&Garfunkel (in spanish languaje) the writer talks about 65.000 copies.

Regardless of the sales figures and the number of concert he will do or not do, I will still Love and admire Paul´s work and never wish that he retires...If he doesn´t like touring (which I secretly believe) then we should respect that.

Hes, I remember that article I read (think it as in the ´Spiegel´) - I was so shocked at that time because I have never seen Paul live till that time, and then he said he will never tour... well just 1 year later the Paul/Bob tour was announced (since that time I knew that you should not believe everything Paul is planning to do, he changes his mind very fast) since 1999 he is touring every year (except 2005 tor finish his album...?) So I think he has al ot of fun doing that, he enjoys playing the same hits all the time, and he must have a lot of fun with his long time band members/friends.

I also do not think he would have retired if the Capeman would have been a success - maybe then we would had have to wait 2-3 years longer for the next tour/album.

I´m sorry Natacha but a real artist plays live too (and not only in studios, helped by machines)and that´s where you can really enjoy his (her)talent ! Everybody (it´s mainly true nowadays with the help of electronics) is able to sing in a studio, not everybody is able to play live.
And apart from the fact to be able or not, I would worry if an artist refuses to make concerts, to share with his fans his passion for music. It´s a part of the job and of the passion and if Paul doesn´t feel like making concerts anymore, that´s a bad image he gives.

It is just curious, because still after all these years Hearts And Bones counts as Paul Simons real big flop - but it sold 500.000 copies.

At the time when the Capeman was released here in Austria it was everywhere in the "TOP NEW" category (means you could listen to it in the cd-shop in a extra player)... this years Surprise was hard to find ... think I found 2 copies under S - ´Simon and Garfunkel´

Don´t misunderstand me. I want to see and hear Paul Simon live again and I would be extremely disappointed if he doesn´t come to Europe next spring.
However, you have to be realistic, Paul is not a "showman", when on tour, concerts are (almost)the same night after night. He is awkward on stage and doesn´t really communicate with the public.
I think he is doing his "duty" when he tours but not much more than that.
I don´t doubt that he is able to sing and play live but I very much doubt his eagerness to do so.
Is it part of his job to tour ? I don´t see it this way and I am grateful(enough) to him that he still composes jewels like ´Another Galaxy, ´I don´t believe´or ´Everything about it is a Love song´.

Paul has already said in an interview that it takes him some time to become a "public" man and starts touring again after a moment of recording in studio. I know he´s not a show man, I know he´s not at ease in public but there are many artists who are like him, who don´t like interviews or tv shows but they all like and need to share their music with their fans, in concerts, because that´s where they can freely express their talent and I´m sure you are agree with me : listening to a cd is very good but hearing the songs live has something magical.
I am much less disappointed for myself if Paul doesn´t tour anymore (I will survive, going to other artists´ concerts ;-))than for him as an artist. I would not then understand him anymore because for me, as I said before, a complete artist is the one who plays live too.

Paul is no Madonna...;-) but he likes to perform, in lots of reviews you can read that he has a good time on stage, enjoying himself playing with the band and he interacts with the audience. He also likes to perform with other artists, Allen Touissant, Willie Nelson and many others. I´m sure he will keep on performing and maybe even come to Europe next year. We have to keep in mind that Edie is also touring right now and it´s normal that he choose to be in Amerika this fall and only make a short tour in England. I know a lot of people are disappointed because we all hoped for a tour in Europe this fall. Let´s hope he will come next summer.

There will be a day he will retire and maybe perform now and then in Amerika on a benefit show, but then we have still his beautiful music to listen to.

At Billboard you can see the awards of September - they left out June, July and August. Bob Dylan is already Gold per Sep. 29.

Peak chart positions and sales are not correlating:

Surprise was 14, no award?
YTO (19) is Gold
Capeman (42) no award
1964/1993 (3CD`s!) was 173 and Gold
Negotiations And Love Songs was 110 and Platinum
Hearts And Bones was 35 and no award.

This is really interesting Klausi. Maybe the key is what many weeks do you remain on the charts rather than peak position !

What happens to Surprise is also quite interesting. I remember that when Surprise was closed to its release, there was a little bashing period about YTO. The irony here is that the latter will probably be a best seller compared to Surprise. Unless that people disappointed by YTO were less inclined to buy the follow up...

Anyway...it is something boring to be a PS fan these days. Nobody had heard about the new album, the official web site sucks, as usual, and the forum about his music are almost deserted compared to 6-7 years ago.

Zzzzzzzzz!

I agree about AMPS (becoming deserted), but the forum on this site here has a lot of writers and lurkers.

Surprise sales are so slow because there is really absolute no advertisement. I think today the music companies think that the web does enough advertisement for oldies like Paul... In 2000 they released a best of album a few weeks before YTO, and they even made TV adv. in my country for ´Shining like a national guitar´. So YTO sold better because Paul was back in the peopls mind.

Warner is simply not interested in Paul Simon anymore - Paul should change his label and find a smaller company which is happy to have a big name. But I guess he is not interested in those things like sales and advertisement... he maybe thinks that he is going to retire soon, so why change the label now.

Today Paul is a little bit like Jonah
