I was wondering if someone here was an ex-member of the PSAS.
Would anyone still be in touch with Barbara and/or Sheila who created that wonderful fan club, before the days of Internet?

Natacha,i was wondering exactly the same thing.Surprised not to find either of their names in the database. I still have all the newsletters, and glad someone else can recall how difficult it was trying to follow the activities of Paul Simon in the pre internet days, before the advent of such excellent sites as this.

I was a member too for some time. They got me 3 tickets for Paul´s Graceland concert in "Royal Albert Hall" in London i February 1987. After that they just seemed to disappear...

That sounds very intersting. I have never heard about that fan-club before.
How did that work back in the 80´s - and how did people find out that this club exists?
Where did Sheila and Barbara came from? Maybe they are no longer fans now, I know a few people who are very very enthusiastic fans for a certain time period, and later they change to another hobby (no names HAHA ;-) )

Yeah, I know fans like that too Bodo... ;-)

And I didn´t know about that fan club before the Net !! I would have been happy to be a member as it was soooo hard to have news about Paul before Internet exists (still hard sometimes even with the Net now but far much better :-))

Well Bodo, this is a long story.
I found out about the PSAS through an add put in the NME (New Musical Express)sometime in 1986. I have no clue when it started though, maybe Simon can help on that...
It worked by post (can you believe it!). You had to pay a small fee to become a member and receive regular newsletters - very well documented.
Barbara lived in Cumbria (North of England)but later moved to London - I am sure she is still a fan (she followed Paul around the world during the Graceland Tour - I believe she sold her house to cover the cost...no joke).
Sheila was from Middlesex.
As Hakan mentioned, they proposed to buy tickets for you, or shirts if you could attend concerts...Very dedicated ladies.
I have wonderful memories of that period.
I met both of them on different occasions but lost contact in the late 80´s beginning of the 90´s.

I wasn´t a member of the PSAS but when I started using the internet about 10 years ago, I was a member of Rudi Riet´s S&G Mailing List (Simgar?) Rudi, of course, now runs the Song For The Asking website (http://www.songfta.com/) When an email was sent, it would go to every member on the list, you know? I made a lot of friends during those early years - and I´m also wondering if any them are still around. I know some of you are! David Clancy, Donald McCarthy (from Art´s website), Rob Oudshoorn, May Sinclair, Anne Wollebak. Hakan, I think you were on the list, weren´t you? Does anybody keep in touch with any of the above? I´m still in touch with David, Donald and May, but would be interested if any of the others are still around.

I might be too optimistic but I expected many more answers on that thread from ex-members of the PSAS.
Barbara told me that members came from quite a few different countries (outside Europe).

BTW:
Just for your interest, did you know who founded the newsgroup alt.music.paul-simon ?
I found it out yesterday (and posted a review of his 1993 toronto concert) His name was
"Aaron Rossetto", and in March 1994 he opened the newsgroup alt.music.paul-simon

I think peoples interest often change, especially after such a long time. (20 years now)
Young people who have been fans in their 20s are now in their 40s and have familys, busy buisness...whatever, and older people in their 50s are now 70 years or older.

I think it was a Surprise that you got 2-3 answers in a short time :-) by ex-members. Some more will maybe come. Have you asked on AMPS already? There are a few people who are fans since the 60´s

It is the first time I asked this question.
You know it is strange because I only joined the fan database and the forum in July(2006) but have been a fan for 25 years...
I was a fan in my 20´s (I am 41 now) but will always be.
What I can understand though is that people don´t have the time to come and chat / maybe they think, like me not so long ago, that it is only for young people.
I changed my mind - I Love sharing my love for Paul´s music (and keep up with my English qt he same time!!!)
I really want to thank you Bodo for all the energy and time you putting on managing this site

I´ve started to be a fan at the age of 13 and I´m 37 now (a very long Love story indeeed ! ;-)) but at that time and in France mainly, it was very frustrating to be a PS fan and I thought I was (almost) the only fan (and my friends, at that time used to look at me as an E.T. because of my musical tastes :-))

IT´s funny because I can remeber writing to the Paul Simon Appreciation Society and then finding out they´d gone. I was most put out when I discovered out.

I was a member too, and met up with Barbara in Dublin for the Graceland shows in ´87. Shortly after the tour finished, the PSAS also wound up, and I think they issued just one more news letter. I also kept all the newsletters , and still read them occasionally. I didn´t hear from Barbara or Sheila again, but I did spot Barbara at one of the Hammersmith shows in 2000, right hand side of front row. So, if you´re out there Barbara, please get in touch, and as I´m going to the Dublin show this year, would be nice to see you there again !!
