 | This is what Bodo said the translation of the video was in a previous thread on the topic.
"... action of protest of students of Moscow Phys-Tech University. Junior students protested against English course. The matter of fact is that for two years guys have to study texts about Paul Simon, citizen of Great Britain. This name bothered to students so much, that they had made figure of Paul Simon and bombarded it with tomatoes, eggs and beer bottles . And then set it in fire. Thus studends wanted to draw attention of their teachers to differ English educational texts..."
Even though it says Great Britain, I´m pretty sure they´re reffering to Paul. I mean, that cap says it all. I just don´t understand it. :(

 | You wrote down that the "name" bothered them so much....what do you mean by that? Is it because it is a Jewish name? I am trying to figure out if this is an anti-semetic thing or not. What ever it is, it´s sad. |

 | This was my comment for the video...
"First of all, Paul Simon is one of the greatest sing-songwriters of all time. His lyrics are pure poetry and in my opinion, of good literary value. But, if you students have a problem with learning Paul Simon poems in your class, perhaps you should, I don´t know, TALK TO YOUR PROFFESORS?!? Instead of holding some ridiculous, pointless, and offensive demonstration that hurts Paul Simon fans and makes you look immature and violent. It´s not Paul Simon´s fault your teachers recognize his talent. I´m thoroughly disgusted at the display and wish this video would be taken down!"
I doubt that my lone comment will do anything...but maybe if more people would post some comments and flag it as inappropriate, it would be taken down. I´m just shocked and saddened by the way people can behave. :(

 | I don´t think that they´re problem with Paul is that he´s Jewish. I think they are just tired of reading his poetry in their English classes. Though...maybe they don´t want to read them because he`s Jewish and they are Anti-Semitic. I really don´t know. I´m just going by the translation Bodo provided and what the other comments on the page said. Whatever the reason, their actions are very sad and wrong. |

 | Hi
Cool down - it has absolute nothing to do with the musician Paul Simon. The translation comes from a Russian Paul Simon fan I asked (he has even a entry in the fan-database)
I do not know the background of that story, just remember that they ONLY had to read these books by an English author named Paul Simon. |

 | I think its not a burning of the person Paul Simon. They just hate english poetry...
I´m kind of proud that Paul is then the frontman of english poetry in the eyes of the russian students :-). |
