I´m going to my first Paul Simon concert on Monday in San Antonio. I saw some pictures on here of people getting autographs - i REALLY would Love to get his autograph since i´m a longtime fan. How does one go about doing that? Where does he normally sign autographs before/after the show? I´ve never gotten an autograph before, cause i´ve never wanted one... Anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks!

I agree with what you say 100%, but I don´t know if Paul wants to hear that...

From an interview with ABC...

Reporter: "You are the voice of a generation..."

Paul: "I´m sorry to hear that."

exactly. He has no idea how much he influences people. Sometimes i just put on his music and cry, because it touches me like nothing else ever has. I want him to know this. I want to talk to him... maybe to get him to realize how much he touches people. Since that´s not doable, simply having his autograph would mean the world to me.

Jon, can you tell me more about this interview? What did Paul mean by that??? He´s always wanted the fame, this sounds irritating?!

I think it is diffcult to describe but I do unterstand what he means. He has often said that he likes it, when people say, that they are touched by what he does. On the other hand it is a hard thing to be something like a spokesperson or to have an important role in somebodys life, that you don´t evan know. It must be nice when you see, that people appreciate what you do but it must be hard, when every single step you take is watched an commented.

The other thing is - the more you get praised by a part of the media, the more you get criticized by another part. And you have to be a strong personality not to get irritated by the sometimes really harsh comments of some people.

I think if it would only be about the music, no matter if someones likes it or not, that is not so hard to unterstand. But all these comments very often tend to be extremely personal and I wouldn´t like to read things like that about myself anywhere.

Yes,nicely put,Mimi. Its also probably why Paul says so little on stage. He lets his songs talk for him. Everything he wants to say is in his songs, and people take from them what they can.It is not neccessary for him to interreact with an audience, like say Jagger or Springsteen.

Furthermore most of the petty media criticism ( of the height, hair , variety,) I think now just washes over him. " I DONT BELIEVE WHAT I READ IN THE PAPERS , THERE JUST OUT TO CAPTURE MY DIME".

Wait at the backdoor at the venue...about 30-60 minutes after the concert he maye come out.

2nd. way - check out the best hotel in town and wait there some hours before the concert.

Aren´t those the very words of that guy who jumped the stage at Central Park and grabbed Paul while he was singing Johnny Ace? Are you sure he really wants to hear this stuff??

And Bodo, you should find a nice tapas bar and stay away from nasty multinational fastfood bars.

Love Rosemary

Many thanks for the advice, guys. Unfortunately I don´t know what hotel he´s staying at. I will wait outside the back door of the venue before/after the concert to see if i can catch him - I just don´t want to creep him out and seem stalkerish, you know?

Rosemary: I have no idea if those are the same words of that guy - but from what you said, he sounds kind of obsessed in a bad way. I was just being honest, and my goal is not to grab Paul during the show :p I just want an autograph :)

blu,
Use the "Search" function to find our discussion of a project for Paul Simon´s 65th birthday, in October. Basically, this would be a good way for you to say how you feel, thank PS for his music and what he´s added to your life. I´m planning to make a montage of video clips that people send in and send it on to PS as gesture of good wishes to coincide with his 65th birthday. Basically, send me the clip in any format you can and I´ll try to convert it if necessary. If I can´t, I can contact you back via the e-mail through which you send it to me.

Send it to: [email protected]

Also, someone suggested making a scrapbook, of sorts, with letters, drawings, cards, etc. I may consider doing that as well. I´ll likely post a reminder to all via a new thread in a week or so, giving everyone August to send their greetings to me, and me a month to work it into something nice from everyone. Enjoy the show.
