 | Just wanted to know how long it takes one to be able to play e.g. Kathy´s Song if you are not familiar with the guitar or have just very basic knowledge... I thought about self-teaching myself. I bought "Paul Simon transcribed" a while back. Looks quite complicated :( |

 | Yes.. they are quite complicated if you just have basic knowledge.
Try practising you your fingerpicking a lot.
That helps. |

 | Just learn the alternating thumb method or Travis picking: use your thumb to pluck the root note and the fifth or third (the other notes in the chord) in an alternating manner, then use your other fingers (index finger and middle finger) to manipulate the rest. The only thing your need in patience! Good luck.

 | Yes, fingerpicking is quite tricky, or, as Mark Knopfler once said, a bit like learning how to swim ;-) Try searchin the internet for travis picking, I´m sure you´ll find some material about it. But I must admit I wasn´t able to play it correctly until someone showed me... |

 | Yes, that´s right, I play the guitar since 9 month now and I´m already able to play e.g. The Boxer, but I have to practise a lot, and it´s hard work...
But I think in one or two years, if I practise hard I´ll be able to play some more dificult songs. |

 | Kathy´s Song and April Come She Will are quite similiar from the perspective of guitar playing. |

 | @Phoeby Thanks! That´s what I wanted to know :)I don´t play the guitar at all. Just know some chords... But now I know how long it takes one to play Simon songs if you start guitar playing from scratch.
Thanks to everybody anyway. I´ll see how and where to start ;) |

 | The Boxer, Duncan, Slip Sliding Away, Sound of Silence, are all quite simple in terms of ability as far as chords and the ability to be strummed.
I highly recommend trying for awhile on your own and then paying for a private lesson or two with someone who can help you learn these songs. Seasoned guitar players often will pick up the riffs very quickly and they can probably learn and teach you in the same breath (lesson). It is good to have someone to take a few lessons from so you don´t pick up too many bad habits which can be difficult to break later on... |
