 | I just read in an Australian review of "Surprise" (will type it out later) that this album is Paul Simon´s weakest songwriting performance in recent times. Except for "Outrageous" and "Sure Don´t Feel Like Love", the rest of the lyrics lack potency and substance. "A major let down from a man whose songwriting is on par (or above) Dylan".
Do we think there is any validity to these claims?
Album got 4 stars by the way despite the comments re the songwriting... |

 | Think that´s the most rubbish I´ve ever read.
Apart from anything else I would suggest that "Outrageous" and "SDFLL" are the WEAKEST tracks (lyrically) on the album. |

 | Ye Gods, are they BLIND. It´s an amazing piece if work and even when I´m not listening to it, I´m listening to it because it´s bouncing around my head through out the day.
I can´t sit here an qute one of my head right now, but the words are so poetic and fluid. Wartime Prayers is just beautiful, it´s so powerful, I found myself crying when I first heard it.
Yes, they know sweet nothing IMO. |

 | My favourite line in the review is:
"Paul Simon has finally realised that his listeners are not as smart as he is. Thank God for that because the dumbing down works"!!!
Ridiculous but funny. |

 | How could they possibly be listening to the same CD I am. Some reviewers think if they don´t blast something they won´t be noticed I guess. Most of the reviews have been so good. And what an insult to the fans. Dumbing down. Please!!! |

 | That leads me to the question, how can you qualify good and bad music?
I can easily say, what I like and what I don´t like, but that doesn´t say very much about the quality of the music, but about my tastes - and that is what most of the critics do.
What is good music? Something that sells good? Something that is easy to sing along? Something that everybody else likes? How much time do the critics spend with music, they judge about. Are there any points, except personal taste, that can be made? I really wonder about that everytime I read reviews of music. |

 | i completely agree that Outrageous would be if anything one of the weakest tracks (lyrically at least) on the album.
What have they been listening to? "To pantomime prayers with the hands of a clock" not to mention the last verse of once upon a time there was an ocean. i think they are some really beautiful lyrics there. |
