Has anyone noticed that everyone who is giving unfavorable reviews to Surprise on amazon ALWAYS reference Graceland? Everyone who does´t like Surprise says something to the effect of "he hasn´t done anything good since Graceland...." To me this is utter BS. Ever hear of an album called Rhythm Of The Saints? Personally, I think that´s his best album, but that´s just one man´s opinion. Anyone who thinks that Paul Simon hasn´t done anything worthwhile since Graceland shouldn´t consider themselves a true fan. Another thing I don´t understand is how people can "Love" graceland and then consider ROTS trash? I love Surprise and I also love YTO. It´s called artistic integrity people(not you loyal forum members) who wants to hear the same album over and over? Paul Simon, even at his age, continues to grow as a musician and poet/lyricist. Sorry, I had to rant after reading those reviews.....

I agree completely, Matt. I would guess that most of us here feel the same way.

LOL, I just went to the amazon site to read these reviews and found that one

This actually is an album that we should have had from Paul Simon 4 years ago,I personally stopped buying his stuff after Graceland , not that I wanted another graceland type album just wanted him to reinvent himself and music in other ways kinda like the way U2 do so well..

HAHAHAHA

I can not laugh louder - U2 are doing the same thing since..well since they are children back in 1976. They have never ever done anything new, e-guitar and drum and bass mix. They are good, but they are not even compareable to Paul Simon in that category. Whebn listening to a U2 album you can not say if that song was recorded in 2005 or in 1985, same sound every time.
Superb what is in some peopls mind.

Hello Matt, first of all, Surprise gets very good reviews in average.

I think you are right, ROTS and YTO are very good albums too.

Both more "Simon-like" and introspective than the fresh, almost provoking Graceland, whose words are very urban and dealing with unusual relationships. And are hard to follow. The music made it a Hit, as mostly.

I read in reviews and think, that Surprise musically is very fresh and daring too, but also it`s words are very relevant for a much larger group of people.

Can`t remember any Simon-album so relevant, speaking about Religion (How can you be a Christian, Jew, etc.,). How can you tattoo your body.

About elections, Love for children, war, adopting children, aging, death, leaving family as better solution, friendship (I was wrong...).

Almost about all things that matters in life.

That`s new. There had been Simon-songs with words responsible for it`s success, like BOTW and especially 50 ways...

But not a whole album since Bookends, which provided us with some cliches.

On Surprise you get relevant and inspiring comments about life.

I agree with all the comments above. Any so called fan who references all of Paul´s work on Graceland or Simon and Garfunkel for that matter really has NO idea.
