I have listened to the CD 10 or 12 times now and I am amazed. It is the most spiritual album I´ve ever heard. Not religious--but spiritual. It is truly a look both back over ones life and forward to the time ahead. We all have things in our past we´d like to clean up and we all want to have peace in our future years. I am Paul´s age and your view changes at every stage of life. I did not think anything would ever surpass Graceland as my favorite but Surprise has. It is a wonderful work of art. It touches my soul.

I have to agree Suzi. The album does have a very nice spiritual undertone that I am appreciating daily.

Huge call on your part to say it is better than "Graceland". I reserve that judgement till just a little later :-)

I don´t know that it´s better as far as performance or the music. Surprise just touches me in a different way. More deeply I guess. For me Graceland was more fun. Surprise for the most part is more serious.

l also agree with suzi - i can´t stop playing this album - by now i should be sick of playing it, but i keep being so impressed by all the songs (maybe not so with F & D) - i think it maybe that the effect of the electronics in the backing arrangements keeps the rhythm more pronounced and flowing and hence the songs have an audible underlying bounce to them - whereas with eg You´re The One it seemed to me that the rhythm was not as noticable and hence the songs sounded a bit static/monotone - i´d defintely listen to this above any album he has done including Graceland or for that matter any other album by anyone else

I am addicted to playing the album. The more I hear the songs, the more I Love them. An article in my paper gave it 3 stars out of 5 and claimed the songs weren´t "hummable" But I have to disagree. I´ve been singing these to myself ever since I bought the album!

I think this may be my favorite album. Certainly less bouncy than Graceland, but it speaks more to more to my heart. It is emotional without being sappy-way to go, Paul!

I must say this might well be Paul Simon´s best (or second best) solo album. Also really must add that it is VERY hummable and melodic.

I am still bewildered to read one star reviews on Amazon and critiques because "Surprise" really is exceptional.

I have until now only heard the NOjazzFest versions of HCYLITNE and Outrageous, but after my first listening, I couldn´t get them out of my head for a week! So, they´re absolutely not hummable!

I start my day singing simon´s songs...."it´s outragous the food they try to serve in a public school..." Al day long an inner voice continue to sing,.."We heard the fireworks..." Even when my cd player is off. My last words before sleeping tonight were..."like he waters the flowers on your window sill".

Still ´Another Galaxy´ is my favourite.

I am even not sure if I want to hear that song live...very strange, isn´t it? But I think that this song can´t be done the same way at a live show, it would sound very different (like Outrageous and HCYLINE). This album is more a studio work... maybe I am the only one who thinks so, but when hearing them live I am a little bit disappointed.

Also ´Everything about it is a Love song´ has this wonderful driving bass and drum beat..and I think this also can not be reproduced on stage...same for ´Wartime Prayers´ where the back chorus is the most thrilling part, but that can´t be done live just with Paul, Mark and Vincent singin.
I guess we will hear much more accoustic versions...at least very different. (Compared with the YTO tracks which have been played live exactly as in the studio (90% the same way))

Well, I must agree about the spiritual undertone. I finally, huraaah, got my copy today. Was waiting for me when I got home from shopping :-) and I´ve been listening to it since. I just Love it to bits.

Paul sounds excellent and Wartime Prayers is very powerful and moving. I feel it has much the same feels as AMerican Tune and maybe Bridge Over Troubles Waters. Do you guys things the same?

There isn´t a track I don´t like. It has this lovely calming feel about it.

I´ll probably say more when I´ve had more of a listen. Maybe a few days as I´m a little busy, lol!

Must agree with Bodo here. Another Galaxy is my favourite song on the CD. Love the acoustic beginning and the hypnotic rythmn through the song.

Wartime Prayers does have the same feel as American Tune or BOTW. Not as melancholy as American Tune though. Nice threesome!
