 | Does anyone else agree that "Surprise" is lyrically brilliant? I had a closer listen to the lyrics now and wow...! It´s amazing because Paul did not only change his musical style again but also his lyrical style - from a narrative style in YTO (Darling Lorraine, Pigs, Sheep and Wolves) to a more...ehm...cryptical style maybe (hm, I don´t know if cryptical is the right word but maybe you know what I mean - lyrics you can´t figure out that easily) :-) |

 | I am so glad that someone brought this up. It was bound to come up sooner or later lol. Paul´s writing is being amazing. He words are complex, yet simple. The words he chooses makes you think. I Love songs that make you think about what he is actually talking about. He is just a plain genious. That is the only way I can describe it. |

 | I think Graceland, Rhythm and Surprise all represent his wonderful way with words. He just puts everyday thoughts into such beautiful prosaic imagery. I Love his lyrics. |

 | My favourite line is " I`ve been given all I wanted... only three generations off the boat... I`m wearing my fathers Old coat".
Because many Americans don`t know when their family arrived and what country their forefathers are from.
In fact about 80 percent are Europeans and by 1820 they only had about 10 Million inhabitants.
By far the most frequent reason for leaving Europe was poverty.
Simon`s grandfather came in the twenties of last century, he was a poor official jewish singer in church in Hungary. |

 | Yes I agree completely. But I don´t think it is a Surprise that "Surprise" is lyrically brilliant. Paul Simon is a superb poet. |

 | Yes LOL
Of course it´s not a Surprise that his new oevre is lyrically brilliant, but it´s not understood that someone keeps re-inventing himself, even after fourty years...I just Love the way Paul sings about different things without using cliché phrases (à la "Miss you like hell", "You are my sunshine" etc). This is really respectable...Wow. |

 | This is IMO his best lyrics since H&B. Every song on that album provide quotable lines that related to every aspect of life. I feel that this album will be the same. |

 | My favourite line right now on the whole album (melodywise and lyrically) is:
Oh my God
First Love opens like a flower |
