I`m pleased with the album overall (I don`t ever think he`ll touch Saints or Graceland again, and don`t expect that), but am absolutely blown away by Once Upon A Time There Was An Ocean. This song is the hidden masterpiece of the album, I keep playing it over and over, it`s brilliant. Something unstoppable set it into motionâ?¦indeed. (By the way, this should be a different post, but I thought You´re The One was quite good as well, very underrated...)

I am Still blown away by Once Upon A Time. It is so so interesting. I Love Paul´s vocals. I love the way he sings: "Home again? Naw, never going home again." And how about "Nothing is different but everything´s changed"? Soooo intriguing. I wonder if that is one of those lines he wrote down a while ago and waited for the right song to use it in. I remember an interview where he said he liked ´oxymorons´- something about ´earth angel´.
It is definitely one of the songs that grows on you the more you hear it.

"nothing is different but everything´s changed" reminds me of...

"after changes upon changes we are more or less the same"

The hidden gem from the album it certainly is,absolutely gorgeous song. Something about that line "the light through the stained glass was cobalt and red" clinches it forme, and fills me with emotion.

Nothing is different but everything´s changed" In a discussion about changes with my mother and her pals who have all just reached 70, i used that line - it really got the subject going - some of them agreeing with the idea and others disagreeing but felt it was an interesting concept.

I have always agreed with the line "after changes upon changes we are more or less the same" because it´s so true. Yes we change, but not completely, we are pretty much the person we were as a kid.

And I think the same can be said of "Nothing is different but everything´s changed" I think it´s such a moving phrase...why it is I´m not sure, it just is. There´s something touching and very true about it.

It feels true on a deeply emotional level-hard to explain but easy to feel and understand in the heart...errr.does that make any sense at all?

definitely makes sense nancy. it´s true of so many lines in paul´s lyrics.

and in terms of once upon a time, the imagery in the last verse is amazing - one of the most vivid and evocative out of all of paul´s songs imo. ´and the frayed cuffs and collars, were mended by halos of golden thread´... gorgeous!

You know that part were the tempo of the song changes, as the imagery changes. There´s this slight drum beat in the back ground...You know what it makes me think of...A nervous heartbeat. You know, when something, you feel uncomfortable with, is about to happen. Not a panick heartbeat, just a tad nervous.

I agree - it´s my favorite track.

I have been wondering about his line in the last verse - "the choir sang "Once Upon a Time There Was an Ocean" and all the Old hymns...". It sounds as if there is already a song of that title. Googling it;however, only brings up Paul´s song. Does anyone know if there is an old song of that title?
