It seems to me that the average review is giving "Surprise" a B+ or 3/3.5 stars.

Quite surprising considering I just heard the full album for the first time and think it is atleast an 4.5 star effort. It´s bloody marvellous if you ask me!

For most of us it is great - for me even much better than YTO.
But even a lot of fans don´t like it... I would say about 20% of the die hard fans do not like that new album (And Bill has something new he can make idiotic jokes about)

In therms of the music market today, and what people buy, the 3 stars are ok I think. (btw, I am not sure, is the highest possible number of stars always 5? I think some magazines only have 4 stars, some have 5.. ?)

I pose this question then to the 20% of the Paul Simon die hard fans who dislike this album...what do you dislike?

The common links between the reviewers who have called this album either "a disaster", "shy of a masterpiece" or "average effort" is the lack of melody, hummability and supposed "arrogance", which I, to be totally honest, can´t see at all!

I am really interested to know...

i agree with you Sumit - this is absolutely a great album and to me it is a masterpiece - it is his best work ever and i can´t see any weaknesses in it and i´d rather listen to this than albums like Sgt Pepper´s, Revolver or the like which are always rated in the best 5 of all time - i even think it´s that good and maybe even better (even they had weaknesses) - i am sure over time it will receive the accolades that it richly deserves - remember that the Beach Boy´s great Pet Sounds album (another top-5 all time album) was considered a dud initially by the general public, but not, importantly, by the musical peers of the day, so let´s wait and see what Paul´s peers say about it and not worry about how most of those "self-important" critics rate it

Everyone likes Paul Simon´s music for a different reason, and also prefers different tracks and styles.

I Love the melodies on Hearts And Bones, the acoustic qualities on Paul Simon & the soothing African sound of Graceland. Because these are the reasons I love Paul´s music then I am not a huge fan of You´re The One, or even the new album, simply because they are different. Faster paced, more electric etc...

I admit that this new album may yet grow on me, but at first glance I can´t say that I dislike the album because its a disaster or has a lack of melody or hummability. Its just different and for that reason its regarded as inferior (at least until we get used to an appreciate this change of direction).
