As I understand from the excellent article in the New York Times submitted by Sumit, the recording process of this album was very unusual.

Normally a song is written and completed (Simon needs weeks for that with changes and new thoughts over that period), and then a number of (expensive and busy) musicians record it in days or weeks. One of the final versions is said to be ok. The musicians were all present over this time and then go away. After it you can mix, change loudness, maybe add something or leave out, but you cannot change what was done.

Here recording is like writing: Simon met Eno several times, and worked mostly for himself in 8 (!) studios for two years.

This explains why he nearly is the only guitarist and invited only few other musicians probably only from time to time (mainly for bass and drums).

The result is a much thought over and oftenly changed product.

A little bit of this was in Graceland, but there he was in South Africa only one time for two weeks.
