 | Hey everybody, Surprise was released today in Belgium, and I took the afternoon off (not that crazy, I think, after such a long wait) to go and buy it immediately. By now I have listened to it twice already, and I wasn´t disappointed, I can tell you. I am not a musician, so you don´t have to expect any musical explanations from me, but I think I am going to like it very much! I am really sorry for everyone else who has to wait so much longer. There was a review of the new album in one of our local papers here last wednesday, and it was a glowing review! I am going to translate it and upload it for everyone to read. |

| The artwork of the booklet is superb. There is one picture of Paul in it, nice..;-) at the song That´s Me.

| I just heard the album and I can´t say I like it very much. Where is the melody? Where are the fun, uplifting songs? It seems like Paul just "Thinks too much"! The whole album is a little depressing to listen to and I can´t see that it will be a bestseller at all. All "marketing talk" before the album release, comparing it with the best Paul´s done before, turns out to be just marketing talk, with very little truth.
You can tell that he has worked a lot with the lyrics (and the songs). But earlier Paul has balanced intricate lyrics with music that is easy to "take in", but this time the music is just uninspired and, well boring for most part. Certainly there is a phrase or a part of a melody here and there, but just when you thought you new what direction the song was about to take it changes into something different. Neil Finn´s album title "Try Whistling This" from 1998 comes into my mind!
Best track: The simple "Father & Daughter" (but that song wasn´t really made for the album). Wartime Prayer is also OK. |

| Maybe it´s artisically challenging? If you wish to listen to easy pop, buy Spice Girls. I like it a lot, and I certainly think it´s a fun record. (yeah. Boo) |

| Can´t agree in anything you wrote Hakan.
All the songs have great melodies, there are many funny lyrics, uplifting songs are Outrageous and Sure don´t feel like Love.
Paul Simons albums are not measurable in the category ´Bestseller´, there isn´t even a radio station which plays his kind of music - because the mass of people has the same boring taste. F&D is the only song which IMO does not fit to that album, it is too simple, at the moment I do not listen to that song.
I can only say what you dislike about the album (new directions suddenly) is the thing I love the most about - and these songs are never boring in any way. That´s Me is so cool, another songs starts in the middle...Surprise |
