GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY, bob Dylan

Well, if you´re travelin´ in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true Love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm,
When the rivers freeze and summer ends,
Please see if she´s wearing a coat so warm,
To keep her from the howlin´ winds.

Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That´s the way I remember her best.

I´m a-wonderin´ if she remembers me at all.
Many times I´ve often prayed
In the darkness of my night,
In the brightness of my day.

So if you´re travelin´ in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Is it just me, or is there a alot of similiarities between Scarborough Fair and the lyrics on this song?
´She once was a true Love of mine.´
´Remember me to one who lives there.´

and the whole coat in the second verse is similar to the:"tell her to make me a cambric shirt"

I may be totally wrong on this one, but I just thought it sounded like Bob Dylan also had heard Scarborugh Fair at some point...

Hi Emily. As I´m sure you know "Scarborough Fair" is an Old English traditional, that Paul Simon heard Marty Carthy sing when he was in England. Before that, Dylan, who met Carthy in England in 1962, was inspired by the song to write "Girl from the North Country". That song is from 1963. When Simon first began singing the song and in 1965 included it on "Songbook", Carthy actually got really mad, accusing Paul for having stolen his arrangement. Not before this millenium did they "make up"!
Well, to put it short, yes, the Dylan song is absolutely inspired by Scarborough.
BTW there is a great duet with Johnny Cash of this great Dylan song.

Scarborough Fair, BTW, comes in many different versions, most of them with more verses than those we know from S&G´s recording of the song.

The duet with Johnny Cash is brilliant. Dylan´s voice is great when he doesn´t do that raspy thing

It´s also on the Johnny Cash "Essential Collection", which is a great introduction to the Man in Black.
