Surprise is already in the top-ten of worlwide amazon sales. Nr. 6, Nr. 4 yesterday.

The price of 10,98 Dollars is very competitive!

It is really hard to say what that means.
The chart ranks start when the album is released? These are just pre-orders. So when finally on May 9 Amazon is sending out all these pre-orders, could it be that Surprise will reach a top position in the charts, at least in the first week?

But this position is really very good, especially because I don´t think that everyone who ordered the album has heard some songs already (amazon does not offer pre-listenings)
Could it be that some S&G fans now after the last S&G tour think that Garfunkel will be on that CD - especially because it is called ´Surprise´...? ;-)

(I´m posting too much)

BTW: I have a really strange idea now. Is it possible to chancel a pre-order, I guess yes..orders on amazon can be chancelled all the time before they are send out.
Maybe someone who has already ordered can check that? An if it is so, why not pre-ordering another 100.000 CD´s ? Then Paul would be on position one for 1 day. Seriously, I think that works.

I guess they have found that ´error´ already before, and now changed the maximum to only 5 pices when the CD is not released jet.

You can order 999 CD´s from every other CD...costs a few thousand $ :-)

I placed an order on Amazon and then cancelled it. I found it locally for a great price and can get it on the day of release and not wait. I want it now. One day for shipping was just too long to wait.

Seriously though , do sales on Amazon.Co.UK count towards UK Album Charts?

Don`t know the rules of chart entries, but I think, they TRY to base it on sales everywhere now. But it is not easy, with presales, return-copies, etc.

In the seventies, the charts in the US were also based on airplay, but they changed it. In that time, when single-hits/charts were more important, too many disk-jockeys were "supported" by record-companies to play their stuff.

A top-ten-single was a business for itself plus automatically created album-sales.

But there were more and more albums like Dark side of the moon by Pink Floyd with no hit and big sales.

Graceland is another example. Who buys a single and then the album?

My impression is, many established stars don`t release singles anymore.

There were different charts in the UK (Melody-Maker, New-Musical express) as well as in the US (Billboard and Cash-Box).

A true story is, that Columbia up to know refuses to confirm Still Crazy After All These Years, Simons best selling album of the seventies, Nr. 1 in the US, as Platinum (more than 1 Million units).

Because of a lawsuit between Simon and Columbia under the new boss Walter Yetnikoff, who replaced Clive Davis. Simon found no acceptable way of communicating with Yetnikoff and changed to Warners in 1978.

Well, I´m sure they count - which sales else should count? The question is if mp3 online download sales count too.

the date is still May 9 on amazon.com
Amazon.de never had a better date AFAIK, but they have just made an error I guess.
