 | i was thinking, as i sit here waiting for ´Surprise´ or ´musical palette´ or whatever the cd might be called to come out...do you think paul might make a cd sometime that would be just him and an acoustic guitar, kinda in the vein of neil diamonds ´12 songs´? i was thinking about it, i´m not saying he would need rick rubin to help him out, but do you think he would allow himself to come full circle and go back to folk almost?
i´m not saying he´d write simon and garfunkal era music, but as a final cd, just have it be simple like that...
i think it would make for a very interesting concept...Paul Simon starts out acoustic folk, travels all over the world broadening his styles, then returns, comes full circle, with a cd like that.
i was just thinking of the Possibilities... |

 | i, personally, would Love that. his music (voice, guitar playing and lyrics) are songs in and of themselves. all of the things that he adds on top of them are beautiful as well, but when it is stripped down to just him and his guitar, it usually speaks to and moves my soul even more.
one of my favorite songs, if not my absolute favorite, is "Can I Forgive Him" from Songs From The Capeman. it carries such an incredible intimacy and vulnerablity with it that makes the lyrics come across as life and not just story. the song breathes and lives on its own because there is no production, but just his beautiful voice and an arrangement on the guitar that must have taken weeks to complete.
all of that to say, yes, i would LOVE it if Paul came out with a solo album that was completely solo, though i think that it will never happen. i know that he did do "Songbook," but his songwriting then pales in comparison to his songwriting now. most of those songs are better when fully produced. |

 | His 12-city solo acoustic-tour in 1984 was a thrill. He had chosen 20 oder 25 of his best and guitar-based songs, performed them alone.
But with Late In The Evening, his latest hit, he had to make an exception.
I think his biggest musical gift is to chose out of several options. He gets them from other musicians and comes to new solutions again by himself. Collaboration on a high level, band-leading.
On One-trick pony amd Hearts And Bones there simply was not enough inspiration. It was his show. The songs are good, the final result could have been better.
Having Patti Austin to sing some lines on Long, Long Day or Al DiMeola play a guitar solo on Allergies and Phil Glass arrange the strings on The late great Johnny Ace is not enough.
And: you have to change your sources from time to time. |

 | Well, Klausi, given that Hearts And Bones is definitely one of his best albums, I don´t see your point :-) ? |

 | Hm, Paul Simon was not satisfied with it. I think there is only one weak song (Cars Are Cars), but many much too familiar sounding arrangements. |

 | This would be brilliant. I also Love Can I forgive him, and I love the acoustic, more sparse arrangements on ´Paul Simon,´ such as Armistice day. His guitar playing is so beautiful and such an inspiration to me to play guitar myself (and countless others I shouldn´t imagine!).
Hopefully, it would be easier for him to arrange and record and take less time to make and bring out too!

 | Well, I don´t agree with mr. Simon (or you), then :-)
I wouldn´t say, that it´s his BEST album, but for some reason it´s the one album that I keep coming back to more often than others. I guess we all agree that "cars..." is one of his weakest songs, but appart from that some of his best and most underrated songs are on this album (Allergies, Think...(a, b), Train...). And I don´t quite understand which arrangements sound "too familiar"? |

 | Paul Simon has suffered from a caclium deposit in his left or right hand which stopped him from playing for a while. Now, he claims he can never reach the level on Paul Simon (Peace Like A River) again. Art wanted to do a full acoustic set in 1981 but Paul Simon had to decline that ambitious proposition. |

 | I think that he toured small venues. He still played with a band, right? |

 | no band
but in fact a lot of strumming instead of pickin
i dont like a lot of these arrangements, whil sprinngsteen made some great accoustic tours with his guitar only, Simon just sounds a little bit...hm...simple
I dont think i would preferr a guitar only album today with the songs he is writting now. And i think for simon it is not enough, the songs would sound unfinished as can i forgive him does - for me.
the ps songbook is another story, that was moree than 40 years ago, simply folk songs for guitar players.
for example, just take Hearts And Bones - the bass is so important on that song. or also f&d, it needs the bass and drums to get this moving gently rhythm, without that it just would be strumming. Or he would only write very slow ballads like surfer girl (the guitar style), and that would be boring too. an album needs slow and fast songs |

 | Good news ! I heard on the radio that if the album is not out yet it´s because he´s re-recording the songs with Artie ! no - alright, hope I´m joking... an acoustic album would be pure and great, but if he lost agility on his guitar (too bad, I didn´t know these ´Allergies´ had that consequence !), as a perfectionnist he won´t do that.
Anyway, he seems to participate to many jazz shows... maybe we will have a jazzy sound ? I´d enjoy that... |

 | I´m agree with you Bodo : an acoustic album would be a bit boring in my opinion. And Paul can make so beautiful musics that it would be a pity too !! |
