We know Paul Simon is not religious. He explains that in his comment to Silent Eyes (The dreamer of music-site) and also in the song "Old".

Bob Dylan was religious and released three (!) christian albums from 1978 to 1981; he even prayed on stage then.

George Harrison was on the Indian trip before.

Simon made his jokes about Hare Krishna in his special and One-trick pony.

And I`m sure, the first verse of Ace In The Hole, where he could apologize as if the song is from Jonah Levin, was adressed to Dylan too.

"Some people say Jesus
that`s the Ace in the hole
but I never met the man
so I don`t really know
Maybe some christmas
if I´m sick and alone
he will look up my number
call me on the phone and say..."

This is quite hard stuff for religious people, and many of them in the US are quite fanatic, as the actual discussion about Darwin and the bible shows.

But Simon is tolerant and let the Jessy Dixon Singers be heard in worldwide households with "Jesus is the answer" on "Live Rhymin`".

But making jokes about Hare Krishan isn´t a Proof that you are not religious I think :-)

I think that Simon is not a religious person in therms of beeing jewish - or christian, but he is a very spiritual man, he is closer to buddhism, yoga and other things like that. And he is still searching for something.

Sometimes we don`t know who we are
Sometimes force overpowers us and we cry
My teacher carry me home
Carry me home

Also Madonna is religious now, she calls herself Esther...don´t know if the religious people appreciate her music and videoclips....;-)

And Bush won the elections by the support of the religious people in Amerika.

Paul always liked the bible, "the greatest story ever told". And "The Boxer" was influenced by the bible.

And he was "deflowered" as Duncan by this young religious woman reading from the bible.

Sometimes she went into his tent (Live rhymin), sometimes he in her (as on the original record).

And was just thanking the Lord for his fingers, just as I do (for HIS fingers).

Yes, the phrase "workman´s wages" derives from the Bible. He used the bible on ´Old´ to show that old things can have great value. He practices Yoga (as do I) and especially You´re The One has that oriental influence. Paul must have been a compulsive thinker (Think too Much a and b) and now he feels more at ease (Quiet or Graceland).

I guess Paul is inteligent enough to select and keep to himself the best things of each religion exactly as he does with music and musicians all over the world

Oh, Jupira, that`s interesting. Never thought about this option!

I think I will be a moslem to a certain degree, because to die for Mohammed makes life after life worth living.

And a christian, because I like meat from pigs and really don`t like to be hungry during Ramadam.

And a Hindu, because then I will be reborn in one class higher.

And a Buddhist, because...? Anything left?

I agree with Jupira. I have faith that Paul Simon is intelligent enough to draw enough wisdom from his education to determine what belief best suits him. I pray that he falls under the Messianic Jews as he is originally Jewish and that may not be taken away from him...it will always be a part of him. I do not necessarily think that his lyrics need to explain anything about himself and that maybe he does not like it when individuals analyze his work as if it were the Bible.

You know Klausi,I had never thought that that line in ´Ace In The Hole´ night have been directed towards Zimmy, but I´m betting it is! It certainly fell right in the middle of Dylan´s 3 album ode to Christian fundamentalism. I remember reading somewhere about ´Paul Simon´s secular lyrics´ and I thought that was an astonishing way to put it. I hear a lot of Biblical/Religious references in his lyrics, especially in the earlier S&G material. Didn´t Judith Piepe host a BBC show in 1965 called ´The Religious Imagery In the Songs of Paul Simon´? It was something like that,I´m sure. I am myself, theologically disadvantaged, but I believe much like Jupira stated earlier on. That Paul would use his intellect and inquisitiveness to find elements from many beliefs to live by. Much the same way he blends unrelated musical and lyrical ideas into something new and beautiful.
