 | We are his fans Bluesmoke.
You can not compare Paul Simon to any other person on the street, he is a person of the public life.
And we dont want much of him, but Simon wants to sell albums, and he is a pop star, so at least he could say what is going on with his career at the time.
It sometimes is very strange with him, he wonders why he has not the same success then 20 years ago (and in fact he dislikes that and gives the fault to the radio stations who dont play his songs), but the fact is that he is hidding for 3 or 4 years all the time, doesnt give interviews, does not give any statements about his work, no advertising for his work, nothing - and then again he wonders why his album will not sell well... |

 | Indeed - I think at least SOME promotion wouldn´t do any harm at all. I mean, no one expects him to make videoclip (which is a pity, when I think about it...) or perform at Top of the Pops etc. Nowadays it would even feel strange if Paul came to Wetten Dass (a popular German TV show with usually big guests like Madonna). But what about regular news on his official site? Maybe some appetizers for his new album (soundclips) like David Gilmour did...BTW, have a listen to his new album, it´s really nice - and it took him 22 years. So maybe there´s hope with Paul? ;-) |

 | Making music is not just a hobby, Bodo. |

 | Well, no, you didn´t understand Jeroen - making music is a hobby.
For Paul Simon it is a hobby or he would have been a maths teacher. He just had luck to earn a lot of money with his favourite spare time activity. Around 99.9% of all people on earth can not earn their living with their favourite spare-time hobby, they have to work somewhere else. Today we are living in a society where some people get an unbelievable amount of money, for some thing that just happened they can do very good (writting a song, looking nice). He could be Blessed to live in these days, and not 150 years ago (what do you think Paul Simons would have worked as then?) He had a lot of luck, and got a lot of money from people buying his music. And if he would not make money with his music, then you would call it his hobby. Just because there are some big industries behind it has not become something else for Paul. |

 | It´s not only luck, you have to have talent. You´re right, it´s overpaid, Paul himself knows that, he talked about it at the Dick Cavett show. And you have to be a strong person to survive in the music business. A lot have talent but can´t deal with the success, they use too much drugs or alcohol. Paul had some hard times in his career, it isn´t as easy as it looks. |

 | Making music is not the thing that is overpaid. It is the businessmen, the managers who get all the revenue. Paul Simon knows how to deal woth the business side of the industry. 150 years ago, Simon wouldn´t have been a songwriter. he´d probably be taylor or a cantor. But I don´t see why that justifies all that pressure. He´s a human being appropriated by thousands of people, whose lives he helped shape. His derivative image is very important to a lot of people. Regretfully, that is the only that you´re ever gonna get. His own life is his. |

 | I don´t think there´s any need for us to demand updates from Paul concerning his new album. It´s coming, and yes, it´s been a long time, but so what? The man is 64 years Old, has three young children and a wife, and he doesn´t just do music, either. He works with charities and needs time for a little peace and quiet, too.
I think people tend to forget that their favourite singers are NOT their personal property and actually have a life outside of their career.
At 64, when he has more than enough money to retire for good, we should be grateful that he´s decided to still make music and tour in the first place. |

 | I concur. We´re damned lucky he´s still making records and is still around to make them. |

 | I see your point Brandy but I still can´t help getting more and more impatient about the new album because it was announced sooo long ago ;-) I hope it won´t beome a running gag like the new Guns ´n Roses CD... |

 | Well, on the other hand I don´t know a lot of retired musicians.
You know, everyone of them comes back (Tina Turner, Phil Collins) after a few years (even earlier than 6 years) |

 | Yeah, think of those fans! They´ve been waiting 14 years, I think. And isn´t it slated for release this year? |

 | facts about emotions,
i dont think that everyone who enters the public arena as a musician always has a choice. popularity, while welcome, may be misconstrued as an invitation for a demand on something that is very personal. |

 | I think we should all consider ourselves lucky that Paul is still able to release an album. Sure its great to hear new stuff from him but lets just savour what we have.
Beatles fans know they won´t EVER get anything new, but they savour what has been released. Sure it would be nice to hear more updates about Paul´s album than we do (after all, he is very detached from his fans..we all know that). But let´s just put up with what we´ve got and appreciate what comes out when it does.
I get the feeling that arguing about it or talking about how long the album is taking won´t make Paul release it any quicker. |
