A while ago I heard a classical song that sounded quite like American Tune. Does somebody know the title of this classical tune?

Paul´s source was "Herzlich tut mich verlangen" from the St Matthew Passion. Bach in his turn took the melody from an earlier work by Hans Leo Hassler.

Once I researched this story in full for the german forum.

Hans Leo Haßler composed the melody in 1601.

J. Crüger took the lyrics from his friend Paul Gerhard in 1656 and from then it was "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden".

Means "Bloody head", of Jesus Christ with his thorny crown. (Finally slip slidin`away - surely the words "passion" and "thorny crown" in this song refer to it).

J.S. Bach (born 1685) changed and improved the melody, and used it not only for his St. Matthew Passion, but also in different other pieces such as his also very famous christmas-oratorio.

Paul Simon likes to use music, which is free of charge, but nevertheless good...

Of course, the "and I dreamed I was..." section is composed by Simon.

I have a wonderfull 4,3 MB choral version of this. It demonstrates spectacularly where Paul´s inspiration for AmTune came from. I am happy to upload it to ExFans if desired. However only if the demand is there. Not sure how many people really want to listen to it!!! Let me know

I hope Paul doesn´t end up having to pay back royalties; imagine how annoying it would be to have a ghost of Bach´s accountant haunting you! ;-)

Seriously though, American Tune is an amazing tune, and I´d Love to hear where the melody is inspired from - so I´d love to hear it too if I can?

All the best,

Tim x

I Love St. Matthew´s Passion... I would like to hear it. And which performers do you have?
I´ve uploaded something very special too - funny "political" videoclip from rare TV show Songs of America 69. Enjoy!

Thanks Richard, you uploaded some nice stuff, I like the Czech cover of Bridge, this song of Paul can be transformed in many ways.
Elvis sang Bridge very well, I also like the instruments and orchestra on Elvis version.
