 | The very cool thing about ´Father and Daughter" is that my wife commented that "Nobody" makes songs about fathers and daughters. She was thrilled by it and the concept. I really can´t think of any songs either that are about fathers and daughters although there are plenty about mothers and daughters and fathers and sons.
Father and Daughter, like the remake of Citizen of the Planet, and like Ten years, have a similiar feel to them in regards to the vocal relationship to the music which is unlike what I am hearing from any other performers. I happen to really like the feel and I bet if any of the tracks are capable of going mainstream it could have an impact on the overall arrangements we hear going forward throughout the industry.
I don´t think a single songwriter writer, not even McCartney/Lennon, or anyone has quite captured the mass market penetration of catch phrases like Mrs. Robinson and Joe Dimmageo, or Still Crazy... These associations have been embedded into our bones as simply being part of what is right with the world. It would be wonderful of that type of hook could happen one more time rather than just for the faithful. | | | | miriam Jan-23-2006, 19:13 GMT

 | Well I wouldn´t say F&D is like today´s music, but compared to Paul´s other songs it sounds boring. But a boring Paul Simon song is better than a Madonna remake of an Old ABBA song of course ;-) | | | | io Jan-23-2006, 21:49 GMT

 | Well, I think it´s more than just a movie song Bodo, given that Paul has his own little girl in Lulu. When I hear it you can imagine that he had Lulu well in his mind when he wrote it. And that´s emphasised by the fact that Lulu appeared in the video.
I think it´s a beautiful song, loving and well written, with stunning imagery. If my dad could write songs I would hope he wrote something just as beautiful.
Hugs
Me
Bodo wrote:
Father & Daughter is a very nice song, has a great guitar lick and melody (and new/good guitar licks are very hard to creat today - and are also very rare), and it has lyrics that everyone can understand (as it was written for a childrens movie). Mainly you have to see it as a movie-song, it shouldn´t stand out, it should just work with the images. It works perfect in the movie.

 | You´re very, very right...
See the opening part of that interview:
Q: It´s really a privilege to speak with you. And we´ve really been enjoying the song Father and Daughter. And of course, you´re no stranger to writing songs for movies. Mrs. Robinson was written for The Graduate. How did this hook up with the Wild Thornberrys movie come about?
A: Paramount/Nickelodeon approached me to write -- to see if I was interested in this movie. And I was, because my children know the Thornberrys from television. So I got to see a little bit of the movie and read the script. And I thought it would be fun to write a song that I could take my kids to see, because it would be a PG movie. And I began to work on it to -- you know, write some music to see how the music would fit in with the soundtrack?the other artists on the soundtrack and how it would fit against picture. And once that, you know, seemed to find a good space, I started to work on the particular scene that they wanted me to write a song for. And at that point I was trying to write something that would help the specific scene, but also have a larger theme that would apply -- you know, that would go even beyond the movie. And that´s how I chose a father´s Love for his daughter. A theme that wasn´t hard for me to write about, since I have a daughter.
.....
And another one:
Q: Well, you´ve been in Austin, I guess it was not last summer, but the summer before, at the Backyard. You were touring behind the album "You´re The One." And looking at the lyrics for Father and Daughter and also your stage movements on stage, you just seem to be in a very spiritual place right now. Not that you always haven´t been, but do you agree with that? Do you feel that?
A: Uhh?yes, I do. My only -- the reason I´m hesitating is, I don´t mean to say it permeates my every, you know, moment, but I´m certainly able to access that part of my, that part of my being, since I´m very grateful for my life and aware -- more aware than when I was young, just, how fortunate -- how fortunate we all are to be alive. To that degree that that filters into what I have to say, I certainly allow it to, because it feels -- you know, it feels so. I don´t really make a particular effort to make the point. I don´t really believe in actually making a point. I don´t think that making a point is very interesting. But if it does come out, it´s because I do feel, I do feel that way. | | | | Richard Pohl Jan-24-2006, 11:00 GMT

 | Hmm, I must confess, I like Father and Daughter - maybe it isn´t pefect, but I really like the mood of intimacy, which it´s taking me in... And I now, that many listeners dislikes You´re The One, too - they think, Paul is losing energy. But I don´t think so - he just matured and transfered this "energy" to the spiritual content of his music... Examples: Quiet, Teacher, That´s Where I Belong... | | | | bodo Jan-24-2006, 15:07 GMT

 | Maybe I said this "it´s like today´s music" because I didn´t live through the time Paul´s earlier albums were released. At that time his music was probably just fitting to the time. But it´s a bit strange for a 13-year-Old girl to listen to music that´s at parts over 40 years old!
I mean, I can´t expect that Paul writes songs today that are like "Cloudy" or something. The Paul I know is still the one from "There Goes Rhymin´ Simon", "Still Crazy" or "Graceland" or whatever I listen to at the moment.
But there´s no doubt, Paul Simon still makes real hand-made music. Not like "Okay, we have the vocals here, add some drums and electric guitar and mix it in the computer!"
THAT´S what I hate about today´s music. I do listen to Paul Simon and Simon & Garfunkel. At school this makes me a misfit because I don´t like TOKIO HOTEL...
Bu at least a girl from my class knows Paul Simon! :) | | | | Ans Jan-24-2006, 17:17 GMT

 | Yes, I heard that too, I´ve also been told that Paul will do some gigs in April with a smaller band to promote the new album and there are dialogues to tour in June and July. | | | | jefferson street Jan-24-2006, 17:27 GMT

 | i agree. i think that F&D feels like the production was a big rushed (the drums sound programmed), but the song is solid and beautiful. it is straight forward, but the lyrics have depth and insight and perspective that is incredibly unique. i just think back to what Abraham Laboriel said to me when he was talking about the new album, "He´s going for the throat with this one." meaning, he isnt pulling any punches, he giving this album everything that he has to give and its going to blow us away! i cant wait!! | | | | Matthew Evans Jan-24-2006, 17:49 GMT

 | Going back to "Father and Daughter" for a moment, when I first heard that song it made me cry. I Love it...I´ve lived with just my father for 7 years now, since I was 13...ya gotta give him credit, he lived through my emotional teenage years :) so it really reminded me of my father.
And I have the Paul Simon cd "On my way don´t know where I´m going" which is like a greatest hits cd, and in the liner notes it says "Look for the new Paul Simon record coming Spring 2003 on Warner Bros. Records"...now refresh my memory, did anything come out in 2003? Or is he just 3 years late? | | | | Ans Jan-26-2006, 12:03 GMT

 | Would have prefered the album and waiting for the next album now.
How many times you think that he can do what he is doing since 50 or so years?
You can compose with 70, but singing so well? I would not like others to sing his songs, one reason for the capemans failure. | | | | |
