 | May we post discusions about lyrics?
I´v been wondering about the line:
"He was Old, he was young" (Train In The Distance)
Are both refering to the same man, who was both old and young or are they refering to two diferent people? |

 | In my opinion he was expressing his thoughts on how he was feeling at the time he was with his first wife Peggy.
I think he felt young in the sense he was younger then Peggy, and still unsure of himself regarding marriage or family life.
I think feeling Old refers to having done more with his life in the past 28, 29 years then most people do in a life time. (I am referring of course as to how he would be thinking at the time he was with Peg.)
Speaking of Peggy Harper, I have never seen a picture of this woman. Does anyone know what she looks like? (Being as beautiful as Souther Skies dosen´t help either. |

 | This is what Paul said in an interview:
Simon : I have a song on this new album called Train In The Distance. It´s very factual about my life. What I discovered in writing recently is that facts, stated without color, are just potential energy. you don´t know where they´re going to go until you give them a direction. The song starts, "She was beautiful as Southern skies / The night he met her. She was married to someone." That´s about Peggy, my first wife. And it´s all true. Then it goes, "He was doggedly determined that he would get her/ He was Old, he was young." That´s Me. I was, you know, pretending I was sophisticated. I wasn´t . |

 | I have always thought that the "he was young" was Paul at that time when he met Peggie and the "he was Old" was about Peggie´s husband (when Paul fell in Love with her she was married to that musical producer I forgot the name and who was working with Paul... And yes, he was much older than Paul... :-)) |

 | Every interpretation is right, because it is your interpretation and expresses your feelings about this song and the words.
This line is great, because it makes you wonder immediately about itself.
I don´t like Paul´s own interpretation BTW, at this early part of the song I don´t want to hear that he was pretending something, that he was a liar... |

 | He could be alluding to Bob Dylan´s brilliant paradox "But I was so much older then, I´m younger than that now." |

 | He was Old he was young? In context I would "assume" it means he was young enough to make the effort to "get her" and at the same time old enough to know how to do it... In other words, he was successful. |
