Hey guys, im not sure if alot of people, know about this artist, but recently i was listening to some of my dads Old vinyls and i came across this artist. Truly amazing is the first thing that came into mind, and i feel so guilty that i didnt know bout him sooner. I just bought his new greatest hits cd called "gold" and i have been listening to it non stop. I really enjoy cat, but if any other fans have any other songs they could recommend that would be awesome. Later

tunepeg35, I like Cat Stevens too, I am not sure if I really care about him now that he is Yoseff Islam, but I like his older stuff.
The real thing I wanted to say was this is a PAUL SIMON site with most things related solely to Paul and his music. I do not see what Cat Stevens has to do with Paul´s work other than the fact they both sing some similar types of music. I am sure that if you look, you can find many different sites just like this one for Cat Stevens.
Now of course if you want some recomendations on some of Paul´s songs, then you´ve come to the right place! :)

Paul Simon recorded "American Tune" with Cat Stevens` producer Paul Samwell-Smith, and I think this is the reason it is too sweet (for me), I like the live-versions much more.

Paul Simon attended a concert of Cat Stevens about 1972 with Columbia`s boss Clive Davis. They sat in the first row. Davis was unsecure whether he should ask Paul to go on stage when asked by Stevens and Stevens to ask him.

Simon WAS prepared to be invited on stage (he had chosen a number of songs), which he later told Davis, and Davis thought, oh, Paul is also touring again, I´m sure.

That´s a really interesting story Klausi, I have never heard before about it.

I have to admire that I get borred by Cat Stevens after some time..it is always the same. I like a lot of his songs, like Peace Train, Morning has broken, Father and Son...so many... but when I listen for about 1 hour or longer I get very strange and sad feelings, I´m feeling uncomfortable and turn off the music. And then I never listen to them for a long long time - or only listen 1 song.
I think in musical diversity Paul is much greater, while Stevens´ only has guitar songs Paul has gospel, rock, doo-woop, jazz , blues ... whatever you want, even reggae. So listening to Paul Simon for 2 or 3 hours is a journey, every 3 minutes it brings you to another country and other feelings... when I start I could hardly stop. I have all album´s as mp3 in my musicplayer, and everytime I build my own setlist from the 70´s...which is growing after each song. Best song to start: ´Learn How To Fall´.

Bodo, you have just said exactly what i think is so good no great about paul simons music - it never becomes monotonous or repetitive. even the rolling stones or queen become a drone if you listen to them for over an hour.

Recommended Cat Stevens albums -
Tea For The Tillerman
Mona Bone Jakon
Catch Bull At Four
First Cuts (Very early stuff)
First Cut Is The Deepest
Also the recently released solo acoustic DVD!!!
Cat Stevens´ guitar sound is the sharpest and clearest I have ever heard. All excellently recorded and played. You can´t really go wrong picking up ANYTHING of Cat Stevens.
This posting adds to my opinion that all the best music has been made.Always best to backtrack in time to when true stars performed live music.....and WELL!!!

Hm, nothing against Cat Stevens in particular, but in this Paul Simon Forum?

In the early seventies Cat Stevens was very popular in Germany, he was many girl`s hero because he looked very well. The albums "The Teaser and the firecat" and "Tea for the Tillerman" were very popular, contrary to Paul Simons solo work. Only S&G were heard.

But I agree to Bodo, that his music is mainly guitar-based and by far not as inventive as Simons, whose main reason going solo was the chance to break new musical grounds for him, not repeating or always writing with AG`s voice in his mind.

So, now Cat Stevens is doing it again - I wonder what might have been the "real" reason for that.

I did not buy the album, but have heard a few pieces of songs on a documentation. Cat Stevens fans will be pleased I guess - it might be exactly what they expected.
For me it has absolute nothing, not a real inovative artist. But he is present everywhere... advertisement on the top pages and on TV, marketing, marketing and marketing. The music industry hopes that this album will save their bad year. It might sell well (although the youngsters do not even know who Cat Stevens is, except that he looks like their grandfather).

So whats the story:
Make a pause of 30 years and release something not really new - will work well. Release a creative unique work every 5-6 years, no one will recognize you. Hope Paul will win the grammy next spring...

Don´t be so mean Bodo. The fact that Cat Stevens has made new music (and a very good CD) doesn´t diminish Paul Simon´s achievement with Surprise in any way.

Who are you to doubt his music or his motives ? Doesn´t Paul Simon look like some-one´s grandfather too ?? Didn´t I see marketing, interviews, TV, publicity for Surprise ? Do youngsters know who Paul is ?? I´m a Paul Simon fan,all my life. But Paul has always seemed much more concerned with how he is regarded in the industry - many interviews give testament to this. DO you really believe that Yusuf cares two figs for the fact that youngsters won´t know who he is ?

What is the "real reason " for your response...that you feel Paul Simon will be under-appreciated by comparison because he doesn´t have the same novelty factor ? Chill my friend - you´re normally so much more generous in your appreciations.

Incidentally, as I posted on Artie´s site, I sat behind Yusuf at the Hyde Park S&G concert two years ago. He enjoyed the show, amd I don´t think he has an un-generous bone in his body.

Yusuf played a terrific part in the Later show on BBC in London tonight. Paul is on Sunday night, so it is a great few days to be in Engkand watching the TV.

Read your post again Bodo, from the first line onwards. Some of us who are regular visitors to this site can appreciate both artists , and yes I hope too that Paul gets his Grammy. How in hell´s name he´ll take it from Bob Dylan´s Modern Times though is a separate argument, and Bob is also making his albums on a 5-6 year interval. No doubt we´ll be querying the "real" reason for Bob making his music as well....

Maybe it is not so bad, it´s good that he uses his islam name. This new album could bring a little bit more understanding between the cultures. Because of that possibility the marketing is good. I know that there is a lot wrong and I believe especially for the women the islam culture should change but I´m not for war.
