Okay here it is: How does anyone here actually KNOW that Paul was wearing a toupee? I have never heard of such a thing in any book I have read. In fact one book I had read on S&G said Paul had stated he was glad that even tough he was losing hair somewhat, he still considered himself having a fuller head than either his dad or brother!
When I look at pictures of him after One Trick Pony he DOES appear to have more hair than in the 70´s but in my opinion,he just started combing it differently, more forward and then cutting it into bangs. I mean even in concert footages you can see his hair flapping in the wind and the roots underneath.....well, it looks too much like real hair to me...THINNING hair, but still real.

It is not a coincidence that the premiere of a movie he starred in himself, a relationship with a woman half his age and a decision to wear a toupet all happen at the same time. Ever heard of midlife crisis. Paul Simon is human, I feel the need to emphasize here increasingly often.

And how can you explain the immense loos of hair after 1993 in a few years - the Capeman musical ...stress?
:-)

All I wonder is - when did Garfunkel start wearing a toupee.... I tmight be at the very same time, maybe just a few years later.

Hihi

Now I give you a good hint - don´t search for a picture of Art not wearing his wig - it will destroy a lot of illusions.

i think I read somewhere that Paul began "working out and wearing a toupee" either before or after One Trick Pony...I could be wrong though. I agree with Callista about his hair looking real. Thin, but real :)

I agree.I read too that he started working out and running in Cenral Park, but not about any toupee.
Besides,I am still trying to recover from Artie wearing one! I didn´t think they made them that bushy!!

"runs his hand through his thinning brown hair..."

Garfunkel`s decision in contrast to Simon, who put his hair piece aside after 1993 (when he obviously had decided to retire from the "normal" rock-scene, get married again and have kids, write a musical) reminds me to the sketch in SNL about 1975, when Charles (Chuck) Grodin wore an Art Garfunkel-wig and he and Simon tried to sing "The Sound of Silence".

I saw Art in concert in 1988 at Manchester Appollo. He wore a black beret cap all through the concert saying, "I am wearing this cap because I hate my hair".This was (the "Lefty" tour)his first solo tour since the late 70s and the cap might have been to cover considerable hair loss. This concert was fantastic, by the way...there were two great classical guitarists on as support, worth the entrance fee in itself....then from out of the darkness, the opening notes of sound of silence. The curtains opened slowly and there was Art with the trademark jeans and waistcoat, hands in back pockets.I was second row from front, centre stage, best seat I have ever had at a concert. The acoustic guitarist on this show/tour was Simon Nichol of Fairport Convention....so I did actually see Simon & Garfunkel in 88!Prior to this tour,Art appeared on the Wogan show, interviewed by Sue Lawley and was really ill at ease with the questioning and refused to sing live, saying he had nothing prepared.Lawley kept pushing him to sing and reveal information about his private life, which he said he would happily discuss off camera, it was embarassing.I felt uncomfortable myself watching this interview and wondered what sort of concert(s)would follow. The resulting concert was fantastic! On the opposite end of the scale, Art was interviewed by the great John Dunn on Radio 2 and gave a marvelous insight into his life and work. This just goes to show that when people are interviewed we might not get the true character of correct information if they are interviewed by an incompetant person, eg as in the above TV show.

Hi Klausi, your first remark made me laugh about running your hand through your hair!

Lat year I was shocked when I saw a pic of Art with almost no hair.
But still I think it is better then how I saw him last year in concert with this strange carrot color!
In the quiz ( yeeeeh I´m in the 6th place ) there is a question when Paul started wearing a toupee, and the answer was as I believe in the late 70´s. Now my question is: is that fake hair on the Graceland dvd? I can hardly belive that, it looks so real I want to run my hand through his hair. Oh oh, my hand has gone out of control, already touching his behind!!! LOL

Paul Simon is a perfectionist! If he does something, then very good, even if it`s wrong (a little sarcastic statement...).

Of course he`s got no new own hair between 1980 and 1986!

One example of doing something wrong very well might be the change from Columbia to Warners in 1978, which brought him the highest guarantee-amount per album of all artists (reportedly 3 to 5 Million Dollars) at that time (topped several times later by others).

It was the first big "record-company-war" in the industry, and Columbia`s new boss Walter Yetnikoff, with whom Simon had big problems, was so upset, that he immediately started to "steal" James Taylor from Warners.

It is by the way the reason, that the album "Still Crazy After All These Years" up to now is not confirmed Platinum by Columbia, because Simon had sued them for not making accurate royalty-payments, and it was his latest album before that law-suit.

Platinum records (more than 1 mio units in the US) were introduced in 1977, when album-sales had grown more and more in contrast to singles (gold is 1 Mio and became more difficult). "Still crazy" is probably two times platinum, since it won the grammy for album of the year and was Nr. 1 in the charts. Even Garfunkel`s "Breakaway", released at the same time, which went away soon instead of breaking, is confirmed Platinum.

Simon had always problems since then when his Old record-catalogue was involved, or when he released an album with Garfunkel etc. (The Concert In The Park-album 1982 was on two labels, similar problems with the Old-friends tour).

The disadvantages were finally bigger than the first "success".
