Same question...
I really think it would be nice if we all could listen to his version before we make comments :-)

I looked Ryan up....looks like a cute 22 year Old....sings one of Paul´s songs "catchier" than Paul?....Well, that´s your opinion....as Paul might/did say....But what is this discussion all about?...Apples and oranges?...Paul wrote "Sound of Silence" at age 21....Seems a stretch to favorably compare this new kid on the block with our Paul....in any way.....

Whoa calm down folks. I know some people are just joking around here, but some people are actually serious. Dawn´s just asking us what we thought about Cabrera´s version. She isn´t telling us that Cabrera´s more talented than Simon.

P.S. ...I´ve never been that big a fan of "You Can Call Me Al" so I don´t really have the motivation to look up his version.

Dawn, thank you for the upload, I did like his version. I do prefer Paul´s, but it was nice to hear other versions too!

Yep I listened to it, thought it was a decent enough version for a live concert, certainly would get the crowd going.

However, I didn´t like the way he changed the phrasing from that which constantly bounces up and down when Paul sings and progresses as the song moves forward, Ryan changed the intonation of every line to be exactly the same which kind of stole away the meaning of the song and lyrics and made it monotonous. In the same way Paul made Homeward Bound that way deliberately. It was as if he couldn´t manage the song, which I can imagine being entirely possible. It´s a very hard song to sing except for Paul (and his fans!)

I liked the penny whistle solo being played on the sax though, that was quite cool.

All in all a little bit light weight and pop-i-fied but nevertheless a decent enough attempt and not crineworthy to listen to like some covers are.

Thank you for it Dawn

"hey!! you really should give the dude (ryan) a chance!! his version rocks harder then pauls!! you just have to accept that ryans version is better and move on.. i dont mean to be rude.. we are all in titled to our opinions"

So in one breath you are saying we should accept a *clearly* inferior version of YCCMA is better than the original and move on?

In the next breath you are saying we are all entitled to our own opinions.

So which is it to be?

Are you a schizophrenic? Dual personality? Jekyll and Hyde? Or are you just 14?

If so I suggest you leave the internet alone until you´ve grown up a little :p

I´ve just listened to it (thanks for the link Dawn !)and according to me, it´s not bad at all ! Of course, it´s not Paul and so, it can only be different but there is nothing bad in having a more "modern" approach of his songs too and good that young singers seem interested in what he has written !
I don´t know this Ryan at all but his live version of YCCMA could have been really worst !
I´ve been a Paul´s fan for 23 years long now but I don´t see him as God ! So, let´s admit there are many other artists and musicians on Earth who have much talent too ! And it´s not because this song is a Paul´s one but sung by an other singer that it should be automatically bullshit !

Uh, so now I was watching that video.

Well, I have to say that I wouldn´t like that song if this would be the original - I guess I wouldn´t even know it then.
But knowing the song as ´Paul Simons You Can Call Me Al´ - and beeing a fan of Paul Simon, I would always be happy if I hear anyone playing it - especially at a live concert.

For me this version sounds like a few other songs which have been hit´s in the 90´s... can´t say any names now.. like some Cranberries songs, or hm... I don´t know, it sounds as if I hear that song on the radio every few weeks. I guess I have a song like that at home as an mp3... Maybe from Marc Anthony ...?

I agree with Matthew - Paul simons phrasing is much better. Rayn is just singin the words without any emphasis on different words. This song is famous for it´s spoken words like:
"Who?ll be my rooole model
Now that my rooole model is
Goooone goooone
He ducked back down the alley
With some roly-poly little bat-faced girl

All alooong aloooong
There were incidents and accidents...

Thats all lost, and thats the most important thing in that song.

All in all I have to say I don´t like it. It sounds as boring as a lot of those accoustic guitar songs played fast and live. The famous bass (not the solo, the overall bass sound) is lost. The special rhythm YCCMA has doesn´t appear in that version. The original is much more relaxed. The pause when Ryan sings 1 or 2 lines without instruments is typical and can be heard in 1 Million other pop songs. While the overal song seems to be much faster the sax line is at the same speed, and that doesn´t fit together.

And again, I knew that song with other lyrics...especially the part when he sings ´You can call meeeeaa eea Aaaaeiilll´.. that melody is from another song.

preparing to listen, with an open mind might i add......hurry up and download u silly thing grrrrrrrrrrrr.......

listening *screws up face* oh dear oh dear, this is a sad sight, someone should tell this young man to leave good songs alone and stick to guitar pop-maybe he could cover a few Busted songs or if he´s feeling really daring, maybe even some McFly!!!! He´s only embarassing himself. I have to turn this off now before my eardrums burst from the torture, eugh-an insult to music

Well, I´m a big Paul-fan and I Love the version of Paul himself. But, normally I stand wide open for coverversions. Aretha made a great version of BOTW and PAt McGee of MAJDBTS etc.. But this is a very bad version of YCCMA, I think! It´s really, really bad. Maby because it is live, but I really don´t like it.

But I respect it if you like this version, of course :-).

I don´t really consider it a "version" of it...well yeah sort of, but Ryan doesn´t plan on putting it on a CD and selling it or anything. He just sings it live to change things up a bit and bring back memories for older audience members etc.

1. Yeah he changed the tone of it...I said I liked his way of singing it better so of course you had to expect that it wasn´t going to be exactly like the original...why would you want it to be the same thing all over again anyway?

2. This is live. Nothing live ever sounds as good as it does if it were on an album...unless if you do things the way his ex, Ms. Ashlee Simpson does. Kidding guys, I like Ashlee. But yeah. You guys said yourselves that Paul couldn´t do it as good live as he did on the album, so you can´t expect that Ryan will. I think that Ryan did a very good with it, and the crowd did enjoy it(both times. yeah I´ve been to two of his concerts. I´m a Ryan superfan)

3. This isn´t Ryan´s song, so you can´t expect him to spend a lot of time perfecting something that won´t ever be on any album of his or anything.

Anyway thank you for listening everyone, and I´m glad that some of you pointed out that it´s good for a live performance.

I didn´t say it was a fantastic version but I was just trying to be a bit more lenient than some of PS fans here. As Dawn sais, it was live and it was not his song so, at least for those two reasons it can´t be exactly Paul´s version and in my opinion, the man did not so bad.

>Dawn wrote ....This isn´t Ryan´s >song, so you can´t expect him to >spend a lot of time perfecting >something that won´t ever be on >any album of his or anything.

If he was playing it live before a paying audience I would expect him to have spent a lot of time perfecting it.
