Hi, I am writing an ethnography of Paul Simon´s fanbase. I am a Paul Simon fan, myself, but I am trying to get people to tell me why they listen to Paul Simon, what they are like, how they respond to his music, and if they think that there is a "prototype" of the Paul Simon fan.

Are you a student at the Paul Simon University? :-)

No, I´m a student at UT. I´m an English major and my Senior Seminar is called Academic Appraoches to Popular Music and Youth Subculture...don´t ask me what it has to do with English. Anyway, we had three papers, the first to pick a musician (our favorite) and write about the progession from independent to major labels, and then to write about how he fits into our standards for music, and finally an audience ethnography...have any contributions?

Ah, I might go to UT if Berkeley rejects my deferment.

Mostly everyone Jewish I know is a Simon & Garfunkel fan. I guess that is a start.

Hi. That´s really neat you´re going to UT ;)

I listen to Paul because his music is so amazing. There´s a song for every mood that you go through. He´s an excellent guitarist and writer. I´d give my left arm to play the acoustic guitar like he does (but if I did that, it wouldn´t be too easy to play, now would it? ;) )

I don´t think there´s a ´prototype´... just about anyone would enjoy his music if they actually sat down and listened to it.

Hello Eileen,
I think, it could be interesting type:English isn´t my vernacular (I´m czech) and when I started listening to Simon and Garfunkel(Simon-solo)I knew any english word (maybe Love and hello :-)). This music was different for me, I didn´t understand any word, but I listend to these melodies, vocals, rhytms. This music isn´t type of "Nicemelodies´ songs", I don´t say, that Paul´s melodies are ugly (Oh my God!), he writes very melodies´ songs, but the line does my body to vibration, this line drink in my skin.
You can hear his songs 100x and you can find there new scopes.
Now, I understand english a bit and I´m Surprise next. His words are a waterfall tales of daiy experience.

Are you satisfied, my costumer?:-)

Well, Kathys_song, I ask about a prototype because I read an article written by a Paul Simon fan sort of making fun of Paul Simon fans -- that Nobody ever rebelled against authority by listening to Paul Simon, to Love Paul Simon means to prove yourself as a mama´s boy, a yuppie, a high-end cultural arbiter...but I found that alot of young people like him, particularly his earlier work with Garfunkle...and I was curious how younger people listen to him as opposed to older people...there must be a difference.

The "prototype" of a Paul-Simon-Fan is female, intelligent, sensitive, not VERY good looking (gifts are justly distributed), meanwhile over thirty (but he has quite a young audience).

He once said, that his female Fans wanted to make him listen to their attempts of poetry in the sixties, instead what the normal Fans (of Mick Jagger & Co.) desired.

Well Klausi described me fairly well:-) I´d disagree with the mama´s boy/ non revolutionary image. Paul Simon songs are the thinking persons anti establishment, antiwar, human rights songs. This was why many fans were shocked when he went to sth Africa initially as they misread his intentions. They would have automatically presumed he was pro sanctions against aparthaid. He certainly is not a person "with no opinions about this"
What i have always enjoyed about his music, apart from the spot on descriptions of ordinary life and Love, and also the amazing music, is that no two of his albums are alike. As Mentioned above there is a paul simon song/album for every mood. Hear one U2 or Eagles or Paul Young album and you´ve heard them all. And they´re singers that I like!!
Any way enough said.

"instead of what normal fans desired" - Well yes, obviously, a "normal fan" of 60s groups is a groupie!
Because
1. That makes sense
2. That´s physically possible.
3. The majority of Rolling Stones fans are female.

Somehow, i think you´re mistaken...

also if you are going to make negative comments about PS female fans, a PS forum is probably not the best place do it, since you said yourself that you think a typical PS fan is female!

Hi there,
oh, I study English myself and I wish I had such interesting classes as you...Instead, I´m doing a seminar on Photography and Victorian culture this semester *sigh*

Anyway, in order to help you answering your question:

I started listening to S&G when I was 9. I couldn´t understand a word they sang but the music was beautiful and soothing, and I still think there is something special about it, the harmonies etc.
About 7 years ago I discovered Simon´s solo stuff. I did Love his lyrics and the varieties in his msical style. And yes, back then I considered myself to be some sort of outsider and I was proud to listen to PS because no one else my age did that. Made me feel comfortable somehow...
So maybe I sort of fit into Klausi´s stereotype description of a fan LOL

Oh and Paul Simon´s lyrics helped me to improve my English and he was maybe the main reason why I study English now :-)
