deals with the problem of communication in our society. But it´s quite funny you do not understand ´cause you´re American, aren´t you ?
And it´s "The Sound Of Silence". "Sounds Of Silence" is the album.
Friendly.

Depends on how you look at it. I´m pretty sure Paul himself said there´s no specific meaning. Art inteprets it as a lack of communication in society. Another big theme is growing consumerism/big business (praying to the neon god). There´s also others, but I´ll leave ´em to you to find out.

Paul said it too. For example, before singing it at the BBC in 1965

Paul on "The Sound of Silence":

?The main thing about playing the guitar, though, was that I was able to sit by myself and play and dream. And I was always happy doing that. I used to go off in the bathroom, because the bathroom had tiles, so it was a slight echo chamber. I´d turn on the faucet so that water would run - I like that sound, it´s very soothing to me - and I´d play. In the dark. "Hello darkness, my Old friend / I´ve come to talk with you again". Well, that´s the first line. Then it drifts off into some other things. I´ve always believed that you need a truthful first line to kick you off into a song. You have to say something emotionally true before you can let your imagination wander?.

?A societal view of the lack of communication?.

?The lyrics burst forth practically writing themselves?.

Written after hearing about President Kennedy´s assassination in November 1963,?it was finally finished on February 19th 1964.

My commentary:
I think Paul went to Europe shortly after President Kennedy´s assassination...that the President´s death inspired the words of my favorite song, ever, is so poignant, as I am a contemporary of Paul, and the President´s death also affected me deeply...the whole country was in a stupor for days/weeks...and was glued to the TV...crying...sad....wondering what would happen to our world now that Camelot was over.....President Kennedy and his family brought a youth and vitality to our country that we had not experienced...his family became our royalty.....we admired everything about him...and when JFK said that before the decade was out, we would put a man on the moon, we believed him...and we did.....
It´s one thing to read about Kennedy in the history books...it was quite another to have lived here when he was President.....he had such charisma...gave us and the world so much hope.....
To me,the feeling of "The Sound of Silence" embodies that depth of sadness and loss we Americans felt...and something more..."that the vision that was planted in my brain still remains".....that hope for a better world hadn´t died.....

Beth thank you for your post...
about JFK assassination, I think not only USA was in stupor for weeks but all the world and specialy France.
JFK was so charismatic and so young in front of the others presidents (De Gaulle, Kroutchev)...
and Jackie (Jacqueline Bouvier) was "so french"
I was 15 years Old and I remember France (and me) was also crying this man...

The "neon god" i believe is television, as stated before people were glued to their television sets in wonderment of what was to come next for the united states. thats my angle.

Whenever I hear the last verse with that neon god line I think it could well be a reference to Hitler and the Third Reich...Just my 2 cents :-)
