last night i went to a very small jazz club in Hollywood called The Baked Potato and saw Abraham Laboriel Sr. & Jr. (Jr. is currently the drummer for Paul McCartney) play with a couple of other great musicians. we sat only feet away from them and the show was the most incredible display of musicianship that i have ever seen.

afterwards, i had the chance to briefly talk with Abe Sr. and i asked him about Paul Simon. he talked to me a little bit about their friendship and then said that he would tell me something funny about him. of course, i was ALL ears.

he started by saying that Paul is a perfectionist and that he has a hard time keeping musicians while he is in the studio because he is known for working 8 hours a day, for two weeks and all just on ONE song and then he will take what he likes and splice things together and maybe record more!

during the recording of the album You´re The One, Abe told me that Paul had been working on the album for three years and had 150 takes! once things started coming to an end Paul called Abe out to New York to his house to see if he could add anything to some songs. before Abe went out there Paul sent him CD of just the chord progressions so that he could become familiar with them.

when Abe got to Paul´s house, Paul said that he would sing the lyrics so Abe could now get the melodies down. he sang in Abe´s ear the words "Somewhere, in a burst of glory sound becomes a song. I´m bound to tell a story, That´s Where I Belong." and Abe started to weep because of how beautiful it was. they then started tracking and were finished in 15 minutes.

after this, Abe said that Paul was kind of upset because he had already spent weeks and weeks on this song, but now really loved what they had done in just that 15 minutes! Abe laughed and also mentioned again that he had finished two songs for the new album and that Brian Eno is producing it (as we already know).

i hope that you find this news fun, im sorry that i couldnt get anymore new news this time.

Thank you Jefferson! That was very interesting reading.

150 takes. Oh my. I think the word ´perfectionism´ is not strong enough in this case anymore.

He has more than 2 done, I think. Last update Jefferson had, Abraham said he had finished some tracks and that was a few months ago.

PS Thank you for the update!!! I´m getting more an more excited for this new album.

Yes but that´s not so fantastic news if it´s true he has finished (and we know what "finished" could mean for Paul ! :-)) only 2 songs !!! Abraham should go to his place much more often : maybe then we could hope to listen to the album next fall ! lol !

abraham doesnt play bass on every song. he was just saying that he and paul had finished his parts to two songs, i believe. paul actually uses Bakithi Kumalo a lot more. im sure that they are much further along than that.

If I remember correctly Abraham played bass on just three tracks in You´re The One album.

Simon is a slow worker, ok.

But he can be fast, if things are ok for him. He wrote "Slip slidin`away" within one hour.

Amd he recorded six songs of "There goes Rhymin`Simon" within three days with the Muscle shoals Sound Rythm section in Alabama.

This great (my favourite one) album appeared 15 months after "Paul Simon". Also because he was not on tour with only one album of his own.

If I count all the messages we already heard since summer 2002! about how many songs they finished ´just before´, the new album maybe has around 25 songs ... ;-)

Yes you are absolutely right! All he should do is "play all the memories in the neck of (his)guitar, and write a song called..."

Well, no matter what it is called.
