I´ve always wondered who the Kathy of Kathy´s Song was. I know Paul went out with her when he was in England and she must have had a big influence on him then. What happened between them, does anyone know? I read a biography of Paul but there was very little said about her? Someone said in another thread that he was reluctant to sing the song in concert...anyone have any info??

Kathy (Chitty) was his girlfriend. She appeared on the cover of his first Solo album "Songbook".

Described as very serious and deeply in Love with him, but not interested in being a centre of attention, which Simon had to be with his music and achieved it to a remarkable degree.

Simon later described his period in England as the best time of his life (well, before Graceland and his third marriage).

Shows, he loved her too. There is not only Kathy´s Song as sign. When in New York again, but before getting famous, the tape "Chez" was for her.

During his second trip to England he was forced to come back to New York, because The sound of silence was Nr. 1 in the US. This was the sudden end of this relationship.

Did Kathy not go to the states though at some point? When was the song "America" written for instance?

I wonder what she´s doing now...or if they stayed in touch at all...it´s funny how something so private is yet so public. It must be strange to be the subject of such well known songs.

At point 5.8 it says:

It´s his then-girlfriend and muse, Kathleen Mary (Kathy) Chitty, of
Kathy´s Song, America, and Homeward Bound fame. Some sources (including
-The-Encyclopedia-Of-Rock-) claim it´s Judith Piepe, but Paul himself
discounted this in 1986, speaking with David Hepworth: "To be 22 years
Old and to have your girlfriend on your album cover. That was -it-!"
They met at the very first coffeehouse Paul played when he arrived in
England in 1964. She was three years younger than him. Paul also
referred to her in the version of A Simple Desultory Phillipic included
on the -Songbook- in the lines:

When in London
Do as I do
Find yourself a friendly haiku
Go to sleep for 10 or 15 years

Copyright © 1965 Paul Simon

Kathy was the "friendly haiku" on account of the fact she rarely spoke.
They broke up in 1965, right about the time The Sound Of Silence became
a big hit. Some accounts have it that Kathy wanted no part of the
success and fame that awaited Paul.

Paul didn´t hear from Kathy again until May 1991 when he was touring
England with Born At The Right Time and, to his delight, received a
letter from her. The British tabloids jumped on the story. They found
her married with three children and living in a remote village in the
Welsh mountains, working part-time at a technical college. She wasn´t,
however, interested in talking to the press.
--------
The song "America" is just a made up trip with Kathy in America. I´m not sure if she ever visited the states.

I often think it is very sad paul and kathy did not stay together. They clearly loved each other very much. Kathy´s song is the most beautiful Love song I have ever heard. It´s not romantic particularly either, just honest and touching. i dont think paul ever really got over her. he wrote about her many years after that. kathy´s song, America, Homeward Bound, a simple DP, and the late great jhonny ace. he never says much about her when asked except that she was shy and his muse, probably because she wouldn´t want it. it took him nearly 30 years before he was lucky in love again. All i know about her is that she sold tickets at the first club he played in, was a secretary, was very shy, wealthy and her parents didnt like Paul because he was poor at the time, split up with him because she didn´t want him to be famouse, declined putting up a new homewardbound plaque at widnes, wrote to him in the 80´s and attended a couple of his concerts, lives in the welsh mountains and has 3 grown up children. have you seen this video on youtube? somewhere towards the end/middle he talks about kathy in an interview. it´s so sad, you can see how much he still loves her.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1IGSrAL6gY

I had been told that the word Haiku was slang for an opium pipe, which would make a lot more sense followed by the words go to sleep for 10 or 15 years, than if it was a code for your girlfriend. However, I can´t find any confirmation of that use of the word, but it would have been slang from a long time ago

I thought it referred to a particular type of Japanese poetry/poet.

I think its weird for people to say "its a pity someone didn´t stay with someone they were so obviously in Love" especially when both people have moved on and are in happy relationships with families. First love is always romantic but only because and as long as it remains in the past!

Just like Simon and Garfunkel!! :)))

Exactly, it stands for a time of innocence. Paul Simon´s relationship with Kathy was clearly at a time when he was realizing who he was as a person, and for Kathy to appreciate who he was before stardom made the Love extremely special. By going separate ways those times remained as they were, untainted in his beautiful music.

Guess it just wasn´t meant to be Juliet. The relationship would probably have ended anyway even if she had gone back with him to the States. She would not have been happy with his subsequent fame if she was so shy. This way they both have their happy memories. Don´t get the reference to S and G in this context in a previous post but I ,along with many other fans, are glad they repaired their friendship and performed together again. Their reception at the 2009 Hall Of Fame showed just how much they still mean to so many of us.
