 | What happens in songs like wednesday morning 3 am, bleecker street and peggy o is that the melody alternates between the Paul and Art (Particularly wed morning 3am)half the verse, paul is singing the tune and art the harmony and then they switch (put your ear to each speaker in turn and you´ll hear)...the harmonies are close, no more than a fifth apart at any time so, they´re both within the same octave. |

When I am asked whether I can play the piano (which I never was), I always (hehe) answer: I don`t know, I never tried. |

 | That wouldn´t be true for me! I used to play piano when I was 8 years Old ;) I quit soon because The Teacher always blamed me for not practicing enough even though I worked quite hard. She spoiled my musical interest for a long time. Now, I´m 22 and I wish had done some more with music. That´s life... |

 | Hello Klausi and Johnny, in my school (a boarding school)when I´m fourteen (a long time ago), i had a teacher who was my english teacher and my chords teacher (she cames from Georgie-USA)she was fantastic! At this time we knew out to sing, but when she did remark that we was singing in play back..( S a G did´nt be famous) we must sing alone!!and we must recite all irregular verbs in English!!
We was very good pupils!!!but I was a real clown!!
After class she teached piano to me : I hated piano!! Come to think of this time and I´m very unhappy!
Young people, take advantage of teaching!!not like me!
Sorry, for my poor english but I´ve never spoken english since 1969!
Little boys, you are the kings of the world!!
to be sign :

 | Hello Johnny,
You´ve started an interesting thread here! I just felt that I had to add my two cents because I perform S&G Songs (among other folk songs) on stage weekly and had to think about these things a lot.
The reason why Art´s voice sounds much brighter is mainly the technique that he uses, he is what is called a Countertenor. This means that the high notes are sung in falsetto. Nevertheless, there are many examples that his vocal range is really great, maybe three octaves.
The distinction between flat and sharp has nothing to do with major or minor. On a musical scale, beetween (say) C and D there is another note - C# (sharp) or Db (flat). So "E flat" simply denotes the scale that is built on the note Eb. But which scale? It is common to denote Major scales by capital letters, so BOTW is in "E flat major" ("Es-Dur" in german).
By the way: I read that Paul wrote BOTW in G to sing it in Falsetto because he was impressed by a gospel singer (forgotten his name) who sang his gospels that way.

 | It was (Reverend) Claude Jeter, also singing on "There goes Rhymin` Simon" on "Take Me To The Mardi Gras". As The Dixie Hummingbirds on other songs there.
Simon got the idea for BOTW from a song "Oh Mary don`t you weep" by the Swan Silvertones with Claude Jeter.
Simon is Gospel-Fan. But not only gospel... |

 | I now that there are halftones like C# etc. ;) I also know that major and minor are used for the keys. But somebody said that BOTW was in E flat! So major or minor or what??? That´s what confused me...
About Arts voice: I guess he´s able to get abount 3 octaves which is common for proficiency singers I guess. The reason why he sounds so much more high pitched than Simon is that his voice is brighter and cleaner. Even though he is only a third apart from Simon, it sounds like he sings much higher... |

 | The S&G version of BOTW is in the key of E flat major. The note E flat is midway between D and E. PS usually sings it in D in his solo concerts. The diference between a major key and a minor key is probably not of interest to anyone, specially as there are several types of minor scales! The basic difference, when you´re playing guitar chords, is that a minor chord has a flattened 3rd. So in the key of C, the 3 notes of the major chord are C, E and G, whereas the minor chord is C, E flat and G.
Stop me when you´re bored with music theory. OK, I´ll stop here then... |
