« My wife and me
took a home by the sea…etc”
it is the beginning of the first version of Duncan (demo San Franscisco 2/71) which is on the box Paul Simon 2004
I ...(with my poor English).. don’t understand all the song
can somebody copy on this site the 2 or 3 original stanzas of this song..
the story is completely different from the definitive version which we all know but very interesting because Paul uses same words and sonorities…
Thanks a lot

my wife and me took a home by the see in the hope we´d be raising some children
Just the winter before we´d come up from Baltimore to the Old rocky shores of New England.
Nelson Maguire is the same age as I but in looks he appears to be older
du du du da da da
from the indochina war and his heart is a hart of a soldier
cryin aaahhhhhhh
boom boom boom ba du boom....

(I´m writing by memory so it might have some errors).
I´m amazed I remember it all!I need to get out more...
P.s. NOW can I have my excessive fan password?please?

This is what I´ve heard (from the demo in Paul Simon album - actually I heard it in paulsimon.com...):

My wife and me
Took a home by the sea
In the hopes we?d be raisin? some children
When the snow?s on the pines???
We come down from the Maritimes
To the oak and the pine????????
Of New England

Oh, the winter was hard
And I could not find a job
And the factory closed in December
??? round the town ??? feeling down
??? the worst winter day could remember

And some Maguire
He?s the same age as I
Though in looks he appears to be older
He returned to his store
From the Indo China war
And his heart is the heart of a soldier, oh yes

And some man?
Nonananaa
?
Just across the Canadian border
Nananaa, dododoo etc.
In the shoulder
Oh no
Oo-oo
...

If I remember it well there are two demos of Duncan, one bluesmoke wrote down and the one of ivalo. Long time I heard the one which bluesmoke wrote down, but what I remember of the demo that the one which ivalo wrote down is better IMO.

Why not just trying before asking?

Besides the lyrics, does anyone know why he has so many different versions...this demo version is definately very critical of the Vietnam war...is that the reason why he did not release this one?
Interesting how he call it the Indo-China war, which was the one that the French fought in 1954...
isn´t he also talking about the Flag and going across the Canadian border?

It´s possible he never found the right lyrics for the first two demos. In the box set, the Duncan demo had long stretches of him just mouthing the melody, but not really singing any lyrics.

Yes, he quite clearly says the word ´flag´ before the Canadian border part. I also hear the word ´communism´ but I am not sure about that. The are also parts in the second verse that I couldn´t hear clearly. If someone American or English whose first language is English could help me I´d be grateful.

Yes. Perhaps Paul didn´t want to release this version because it is a political song (even more than Armistice Day or Peace Like A River).

By the way: this is a terrific song, both the demo versions and the one in the album.
